The 5 Best Ice Packs for Coolers: What the Tests Actually Show

Five cooler ice packs stand out in a published open-air comparison, but fit and intended use matter more than treating a temperature reading as a cooler-duration promise.

The best ice pack for your cooler depends on fit and how you plan to use it—not just a temperature reading. In a comparison published by Outdoor Life and updated June 12, 2025, the Igloo MaxCold Ice Block was the outlet’s best-overall pick; YETI Thin Ice Large, Arctic Chillin’ Brew Medium, Igloo Performance Ice Large, and Cooler Shock also stand out for different needs. The comparison measured packs warming in open air, not food staying cold inside a cooler, so its results are useful for comparing those products under that test but are not cooler-duration or food-safety guarantees.

How to read the test results

Laura Lancaster of Outdoor Life reported testing 11 popular models in June 2025. The packs were frozen for more than 36 hours, then their surface temperatures were checked at regular intervals with an infrared thermometer while they sat in open air. Testing stopped when a pack reached 40°F. The four-hour figures below are measurements from that setup, not a controlled cooler-retention test.

A pack’s open-air temperature does not tell you how long a particular cooler will keep food safely cold. Cooler construction, the amount and temperature of food and drinks, how tightly everything is packed, ambient conditions, and how often the lid opens all affect the outcome. Use the measurements to compare the tested models, not to plan a safe holding time.

Model tested Starting surface temperature Surface temperature after four hours Useful distinction
Igloo MaxCold Ice Block 5°F 31°F Outdoor Life named it best overall and preferred it to Performance Ice on value.
YETI Thin Ice Large -5°F 28°F Strongest four-hour reading among these five; YETI positions YETI ICE as a supplement to regular ice in specified hard coolers.
Arctic Chillin’ Brew Medium -2°F 30°F The reviewer said it stayed near its stated 28.4°F target for about three hours in open air.
Igloo Performance Ice Large 11°F 31°F A 3-pound rigid block with published dimensions and cooler quantity guidance.
Cooler Shock Reusable Ice Packs 4°F 30°F The reviewer reported it stayed below freezing for five hours in open air; first use requires filling with water.

The four-hour values and starting temperatures are from Outdoor Life’s June 2025 comparison. They are not a universal ranking: initial temperature, shape, size, and intended use differ, and a reading alone does not establish how a pack will perform in a loaded cooler.

Which ice pack fits your needs?

Igloo MaxCold Ice Block: best all-around starting point

Outdoor Life selected the MaxCold Ice Block as its best-overall option. In its test, the pack began at 5°F and measured 31°F after four hours. The reviewer favored MaxCold over Igloo Performance Ice because the latter’s slight test advantage did not justify its higher price in that comparison. The test page listed the MaxCold at $7, a historical price rather than a current quote.

Igloo describes MaxCold as a reusable, non-toxic freezer block and lists a 90-day warranty against defects in material or workmanship under normal use. The name covers multiple sizes, so check the exact variant and dimensions before buying; one block that fits a large cooler may crowd out food in a smaller one.

YETI Thin Ice Large: a slim option to use alongside regular ice

The tested YETI Thin Ice Large had the lowest four-hour surface reading in this group: -5°F at the start and 28°F after four hours, according to Outdoor Life. The outlet called its performance strong while noting a price premium. YETI sells YETI ICE blocks in 1-, 2-, and 4-pound options. Its listed 2-pound block measures 8 × 5.4 × 1.6 inches; the 4-pound block measures 10.8 × 8 × 1.6 inches.

YETI says YETI ICE is food safe and covered by a five-year warranty. It also explicitly says the product is intended to supplement bagged or block ice in Roadie, Tundra, and V Series hard coolers—not replace regular ice in those product families. Match the block’s footprint to the cooler and leave room for the ice it is meant to supplement.

Arctic Chillin’ Brew Medium: a temperature-targeted option

Outdoor Life measured the medium Chillin’ Brew at -2°F initially and 30°F after four hours. Separately, the reviewer said it stayed close to the product’s stated 28.4°F target for about three hours in open air without added insulation. That target is a product specification, while the temperature readings are the outlet’s test results; neither establishes how long the pack will hold a particular cooler at a given temperature.

Igloo Performance Ice Large: a defined size and cooler-count guide

Igloo lists its Performance Ice Large Block as a 3-pound product measuring 6 × 2.12 × 9 inches. The brand recommends one for a small lunch-sized hard cooler and three for medium 16–30-quart through large 48–75-quart hard coolers. Recommendations can vary for specific cooler models, so check Igloo’s fit guidance for your cooler rather than treating those counts as universal.

Igloo says Performance Ice uses reusable, non-toxic gel and recommends combining it with actual ice cubes for an extra-cold boost. The product has a 90-day manufacturing-defect guarantee. In Outdoor Life’s test, the Large started at 11°F and reached 31°F after four hours; the reviewer’s value comparison favored MaxCold instead.

Cooler Shock Reusable Ice Packs: flexible placement, with setup required

In Outdoor Life’s test, Cooler Shock started at 4°F and reached 30°F after four hours. The reviewer reported that it stayed below freezing for five hours in open air. Before first use, fill the pack with water, remove excess air, fit the stopper, and screw the cap closed. Because the bag freezes in the shape it occupies in the freezer, plan its storage position as well as its cooler placement.

Choose size, shape, and quantity before buying

  • Measure available space. Compare a pack’s length, width, and thickness with the cooler interior and the food or drinks you need to carry. A large block has more thermal mass but can take up valuable storage room.
  • Decide whether you need regular ice. YETI explicitly frames YETI ICE as a supplement in its Roadie, Tundra, and V Series hard coolers. Igloo recommends adding actual cubes with Performance Ice. Do not assume every reusable pack is designed to replace loose ice.
  • Match shape to the load. Rigid blocks stack and keep their form; bags can fit around items or into irregular spaces, but their handling and resistance to punctures vary. Tiffany Swan, a traveling retreat chef and food scientist, told NBC Select: “I regularly use Yeti coolers that have straight sides, so I like to use large ice packs that will line up with the sides and top to create a cold wall.” Her observation illustrates why cooler geometry matters, rather than proving one shape cools better in every setup.
  • Count weight and freezer capacity. A heavier pack adds carrying weight and needs room to refreeze between outings. Cooler Shock also needs water filling before first use; rigid freezer blocks are ready to freeze as sold.
  • Choose between dry storage and loose ice. Reusable packs can reduce meltwater in the cooler. Loose ice is widely available and can fill gaps around food, but it melts into water. Your preference depends on what you are packing and how you plan to manage the cooler.
  • Check current price and exact variant. Retail prices, availability, and product listings change. Confirm the model, dimensions, weight, and terms for the pack you are considering rather than relying on a dated test-page price.
