In the U.S., start with Apprenticeship.gov’s job finder to search paid Registered Apprenticeship openings by occupation and location. Open the employer’s full listing, check its age and other requirements, and apply through the employer or program sponsor—not through a national application form. If you need help locally, an American Job Center can assist with the search.

What counts as paid training?

A U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship combines paid work, on-the-job learning, mentorship, related classroom instruction, and wage increases as skills develop. The program overview also describes a portable, nationally recognized credential. Those features apply to Registered Apprenticeship; they do not mean every training program pays participants wages. Confirm compensation in the specific posting before treating an opportunity as paid employment. The Department of Labor’s career-seeker overview explains the apprenticeship model.

Find openings that fit your goals

Choose a field and practical boundaries

List a few occupations or job areas you would consider, how far you can commute or relocate, any schedule limits, and whether you want to work while attending school. Search by occupation keywords and location; if results are limited, try related job titles. Apprenticeship.gov offers filters including location, program type, posting date, and skills.

Use the official finder, then read the original posting

  1. Go to the Apprenticeship.gov Apprenticeship Job Finder and enter an occupation keyword and location.
  2. Use the available filters to narrow results, then open listings that match your commute, schedule, and interests.
  3. Read the full listing. Its apply button takes you to the listing site where the application is completed; the employer or sponsor receives it.

For help identifying sponsors by area or occupation, use Apprenticeship.gov’s Partner Finder. A sponsor listing is not necessarily a current vacancy, so check the sponsor’s own site or contact it about openings.

Check eligibility and application details before applying

Being under 25 does not by itself establish eligibility. Requirements vary by opening. Before gathering materials, check the announcement for:

  • Minimum age and any education, experience, or licensing requirements.
  • Work-authorization or other eligibility conditions, if stated.
  • Work location, commute or relocation expectations, and schedule.
  • Physical requirements or other job-specific conditions.
  • Application deadline, required documents, and the exact method for submitting them.
  • Pay, wage progression, training format, and the credential or outcome the sponsor describes.

If a detail is missing or unclear, contact the employer or sponsor named in the posting. The national finder directs applicants to the listing site; the sponsor handles the particular opportunity.

Apply through the employer or sponsor

  1. Follow the instructions in the original listing and submit by its stated deadline.
  2. Keep a copy of the job title, sponsor contact information, materials you submitted, and any confirmation or next-step message.
  3. Ask the sponsor about the opening if you have questions about eligibility, pay, schedule, or the selection process.

There is no single national application that covers every apprenticeship. Each sponsor sets the process for its opportunity.

Get local help if you are stuck

A nearby American Job Center can provide career-seeker assistance, including help finding apprenticeship opportunities. Use the Apprenticeship.gov contact page to find local American Job Center information. You can also ask local workforce staff about youth apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship options.

Consider preparation or another route

Pre-apprenticeship

If an opening expects preparation or experience you do not yet have, ask about pre-apprenticeship. The Department of Labor describes it as preparation for a Registered Apprenticeship or other employment; it is not automatically a paid job. Ask the provider what the program costs, whether participants receive wages or other support, and how it connects to employers or apprenticeship sponsors. See Apprenticeship.gov’s apprenticeship FAQs for the distinction.

Job Corps

Job Corps is a separate training option, not a substitute label for paid employment. Its applicant help center says a person may be eligible if they are low-income, ages 16–24, and meet citizenship, residency, or work-authorization conditions. Eligibility is reviewed after application; other conditions can affect the decision. Some applicants under 18 may need a parent, guardian, or approved representative for parts of the process. Contact a Job Corps admissions representative to assess an individual case. Job Corps’ eligibility page provides its criteria.

According to Job Corps’ application guidance, applicants create a MyJobCorps account, complete application tasks, and upload requested materials such as proof of identity, age, and income. They then meet with an admissions representative to discuss goals and review eligibility. Job Corps may request additional documents and describes a background check and health questionnaire; after acceptance, it helps arrange travel and a start date. Confirm current steps with Job Corps, since requirements can change. The program guidance does not establish that participants receive wages during training. See Job Corps’ questions and answers.

Compare opportunities on the details that affect you

When you have more than one realistic option, compare what each specific sponsor or program says rather than relying on the program label.
