Kraken, Binance, Gemini and Coinbase disclose different kinds of information, but their claims do not share a common independent scoring method. Compare the exact legal entity and service, what a reserve review covers, what security examinations apply, and what protections exist in your country—not just a headline claim such as “proof of reserves.”
What makes a crypto exchange trustworthy?
Trust is not one feature. It is a judgment about several separate risks: whether the company can meet obligations, how it safeguards customer accounts and assets, who supervises the relevant service, and what recourse a customer has if something goes wrong. An exchange’s own disclosure can help answer parts of those questions, but it is not the same as an independent comparison or a guarantee.
- Identify the legal entity. An exchange brand may involve more than one company. Check which entity provides the service you intend to use and where it is authorized.
- Read the scope of the evidence. A reserve review, security examination, certification and financial-statement audit each address different questions.
- Check whether you can verify the claim. Find out whether customers can confirm their own inclusion in a reserve process, and what the process does not cover.
- Match protections to your location. A permission or license in one jurisdiction should not be assumed to apply to every entity, product or customer.
How do the major exchanges compare?
The table summarizes disclosures by the providers themselves. It is not a safety score: the items are not equivalent, and a blank or “not stated” means the cited material does not establish that detail for this comparison.
| Exchange | Entity and jurisdiction disclosed | Reserve or financial transparency | Security and assurance disclosures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Not stated on the cited reserve page; check the legal entity for the specific service and country. Kraken Proof of Reserves | Describes snapshot-based proof of reserves and customer self-verification using account identifiers and a Merkle tree. Its latest spot scope lists BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, USDT and XRP; staking, margin and futures are described separately with methodology notes. The live page’s displayed report date should be checked because it changes. Kraken Proof of Reserves | Not stated on the cited reserve page. Kraken Proof of Reserves |
| Binance | The reserve page names Nest Exchange Limited, Nest Clearing and Custody Limited, and Nest Trading Limited, and describes FSRA permissions for those entities in ADGM. It does not make those permissions universal across the Binance brand or jurisdictions. Binance Proof of Reserves | Describes zk-SNARKs and Merkle-tree leaf nodes as a way for users to access their leaf node and show that user-balance sets contribute to Binance’s claimed total user-asset balance. Binance Proof of Reserves | Not stated on the cited reserve page. Binance Proof of Reserves |
| Gemini | Gemini Trust Company, LLC says it is licensed by NYDFS and is a fiduciary and qualified custodian under New York Banking Law. The disclosure does not establish identical coverage for every Gemini entity, product or jurisdiction. Gemini Trust Center | Not stated in the cited Trust Center material as a customer-verifiable reserve review. Gemini Trust Center | Lists SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 examinations conducted by Deloitte and ISO/IEC 27001:2022. These disclosures do not establish that every service or entity has identical coverage. Gemini Trust Center |
| Coinbase | Not stated on the cited security page for each service and customer jurisdiction; check the applicable Coinbase entity and local terms. Coinbase Security | Coinbase says it publishes financial statements quarterly and is audited annually by an independent third party. It also describes customer assets as held 1:1; that provider statement is not a comparative independent assessment. Coinbase Security | Lists two-factor authentication, security-key support and multi-approval withdrawals in Coinbase Vault. The cited page does not establish that security keys are compatible with every exchange. Coinbase Security |
What does proof of reserves actually tell you?
Proof of reserves is bounded evidence about assets and balances within a stated process; it should not be read as a blanket finding that an exchange is solvent or that every customer obligation is covered. Scope, timing and the treatment of liabilities matter. A snapshot can describe a point in time without accounting for later activity or every asset and obligation relevant to a customer.

Kraken: check the snapshot and included assets
Kraken says its review concerns covered balances at the snapshot date, not later trades or transactions, and its page identifies assets and account categories with separate methodology notes. It describes customer self-verification using account data and a Merkle tree. Kraken also cautions that reserve-ratio figures marked with an asterisk may change materially between reports as products or custodial infrastructure change. Read the current scope and report date on Kraken’s Proof of Reserves page before relying on a particular figure.
Binance: understand what its cryptographic description establishes
Binance says its zk-SNARK and Merkle-tree approach lets a user access a leaf node and demonstrates that user-balance sets contribute to its claimed total user-asset balance. That description is not enough to conclude that Binance’s process has the same scope as Kraken’s, or that the two have identical independent assurance. Review Binance’s explanation and look for the assets, liabilities, date and verification steps relevant to your account.

Are licenses, audits and certifications interchangeable?
No. They are evidence about different things, and none should be stretched beyond its stated entity, service, systems or jurisdiction.
- Licensing or regulatory permission concerns a named legal entity and permitted activities in a jurisdiction. Gemini’s Trust Center identifies Gemini Trust Company, LLC’s New York status; Binance’s reserve page names three entities and their ADGM FSRA permissions. Neither disclosure means every service under the brand is regulated everywhere.
- Financial-statement audits concern financial reporting. Coinbase says it publishes quarterly statements and has annual independent third-party audits. That is useful context, but it is not the same thing as a reserve review for every asset or a guarantee against loss.
- SOC examinations and ISO certification relate to defined controls or management systems. Gemini lists SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 examinations by Deloitte and ISO/IEC 27001:2022. The Trust Center’s listing should not be interpreted as proof that all products and jurisdictions have identical coverage.
Regulatory discussion can also be mistaken for present-day licensing. In a response dated August 15, 2025, the SEC Crypto Task Force used Kraken, Coinbase and Gemini as examples in a proposed framework and said centralized-exchange registration by the SEC or CFTC would require rulemaking and probably new federal legislation. That policy discussion is not evidence that the named firms are SEC-registered. Read the SEC response.

How should you choose an exchange for your own situation?
- Confirm your country and service. Before depositing, identify the legal entity named in the terms for your location and the specific service you will use. Check the relevant regulator’s current register or permission listing rather than inferring status from a global brand.
- Read the latest reserve disclosure, if available. Note the report date, assets and account categories included, how liabilities are handled, and how you can verify your own inclusion. Treat anything outside that stated scope as unverified by that report.
- Separate asset evidence from account security. Look for practical protections such as two-factor authentication and withdrawal approvals, then confirm they are available for your account. Coinbase lists security-key support, but compatibility must be checked with the provider before buying or setting up a hardware key.
- Review assurance material for its boundaries. Check who performed an examination or audit, what systems or reporting it covers, and which entity it applies to. Do not treat certifications and reserve reviews as equivalent.
- Consider what happens if access or service fails. Read the customer agreement, withdrawal rules and local complaint or dispute routes. The disclosures summarized here do not establish a universal compensation scheme or identical customer protections across countries.
