Before buying a packaging stock, check whether the company can manage its debt, whether its operating margins are durable, and whether recurring cash can fund its dividend after capital spending and other obligations. Use the latest annual and quarterly filings, compare companies on consistent definitions and periods, and treat ratios as prompts for investigation—not as automatic buy or sell signals.
1. Can the company manage its debt and refinancing needs?
Start with the latest Form 10-K, then check later quarterly and current filings for changes. A leverage ratio by itself cannot tell you whether the company can meet upcoming maturities or withstand weaker demand. Review the full debt picture:
- Total debt and cash, along with the timing and size of scheduled maturities.
- Variable-rate exposure and interest expense.
- Covenant definitions, required thresholds, and the company’s headroom against them.
- Operating earnings and cash generation available for interest, principal repayment, capital spending, and other contractual obligations.
Debt covenants can define leverage and earnings differently from commonly reported measures. Read the issuer’s agreement and filing notes rather than comparing covenant ratios as if every company calculated them the same way.
Example: Graphic Packaging
Graphic Packaging Holding Company’s 2025 Form 10-K reported a covenant leverage ratio of 3.63 to 1 at December 31, 2025, against a maximum below 4.25 to 1. Its covenant interest ratio was 6.33 to 1, against a minimum of 3.00 to 1. The filing also listed $525 million of scheduled debt maturities in 2026 and $2.409 billion in 2029. These are company- and contract-specific figures, not general safety thresholds. Graphic Packaging 2025 Form 10-K

Example: Sonoco
Sonoco’s 2025 Form 10-K listed $537.952 million of debt maturities in 2026. At year end, it reported $378.398 million of cash and $1.25 billion of available revolving credit capacity. Compare those reported resources with expected cash flows and the maturity schedule; a company’s own assessment of liquidity is management’s view, not a substitute for examining the figures. 2. Are operating margins durable?
Calculate operating margin consistently: income from operations divided by net sales. Compare multiple years and relevant peers, using the same fiscal periods and reported definitions. Then explain the movement rather than treating the percentage as a verdict.

Look in management’s discussion and analysis and segment reporting for changes in price, volume and product mix; input and energy costs; productivity; currency; acquisitions or divestitures; and unusual expenses or gains. A margin supported by recurring operations is different from one boosted by a temporary price increase or one-off benefit. Packaging businesses can differ substantially in product and geographic mix, customer markets, sourcing, and exposure to corporate transactions, so peer comparisons need context.
Example: Graphic Packaging
Graphic Packaging reported net sales of $8.617 billion and income from operations of $804 million in 2025, versus $8.807 billion and $1.119 billion, respectively, in 2024. The corresponding operating margins are approximately 9.3% and 12.7%, calculated as operating income divided by net sales. The company attributed the sales decrease to factors including a divestiture, lower pricing, and lower open-market paperboard volumes. Its filing also identifies raw-material and energy-cost volatility, changing buying habits, competition, debt, demand, and selling prices among its risks. Graphic Packaging 2025 Form 10-K

3. Can recurring cash support the dividend?
Check the cash dividend per share, any stated dividend policy, and cash available after capital spending, debt service, and other material uses. The cash-flow statement is essential: net income and dividend yield alone do not establish dividend coverage. Also look for restrictions in debt agreements, and do not treat past dividend increases as a promise of future payments.
Example: Sonoco
Sonoco reported dividends per common share of $2.11 in 2025, $2.07 in 2024, and $2.02 in 2023. Its 2025 Form 10-K says future payments depend on earnings and liquidity. Net cash provided by operating activities was $689.782 million in 2025, down from $833.845 million in 2024. Those operating-cash-flow figures are not, by themselves, proof of coverage: account for capital expenditures, debt payments, acquisitions, and unusual cash-flow changes before judging how well the dividend is funded. 4. How should you compare packaging companies?
Use the same fiscal periods and definitions for each company. A practical comparison should cover:
- Leverage, interest coverage, covenant headroom, and the amount and timing of debt maturities.
- Operating-margin level and multi-year direction, with the price, volume, mix, and cost drivers behind changes.
- Operating cash flow after capital spending, debt service, and other significant uses.
- Dividend cash requirements, stated policy, and any relevant debt restrictions.
- Business mix and issuer-specific risks, including demand, pricing, input costs, foreign exchange, acquisitions, and divestitures.
Non-GAAP measures and covenant ratios may use adjusted figures. Check their definitions and reconcile non-GAAP results to reported financial statements; a headline ratio is a starting point for questions, not a standalone verdict. Graphic Packaging 2025 Form 10-K Sonoco 2025 Form 10-K

5. Where to find reliable filing evidence
The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy describes a Form 10-K as a detailed account of a company’s business, risks, and operating and financial results. It recommends starting with the Business section, then reviewing Risk Factors, Management’s Discussion and Analysis, and the financial statements. SEC Investor Bulletin: How to Read a 10-K
Use the latest 10-K for audited annual context and notes, then review later 10-Qs and current filings for material updates to debt, results, risks, and dividends. Companies prepare their own 10-Ks; the SEC sets disclosure requirements but does not write or vouch for a company’s filing. SEC Investor Bulletin: How to Read a 10-K
