Western Digital vs. Flash-Memory Stocks: What Investors Should Compare

WDC separated its Flash business in 2025 and now represents HDD exposure. Sandisk is the clearest direct listed flash comparison, while Micron offers broader memory exposure.

Western Digital (Nasdaq: WDC) is no longer a flash-memory company. It completed the separation of its Flash business on February 21, 2025; Western Digital continued with hard disk drives (HDDs), while Sandisk Corporation (Nasdaq: SNDK) became an independent flash-memory company. Western Digital’s FY2026 filing says it held no Sandisk shares as of July 3, 2026. For direct listed NAND exposure, Sandisk is the clearest comparison here; Micron offers broader memory exposure, while WDC is a different kind of storage investment.

Is Western Digital still a flash-memory company?

No. Following the separation, WDC represents an HDD business, not a current flash-memory pure play. Sandisk’s FY2026 annual filing identifies its common stock ticker as SNDK on Nasdaq and covers the year ended July 3, 2026.

That distinction matters when comparing stocks: WDC and Sandisk no longer offer the same business exposure, and WDC should not be treated as a direct proxy for NAND prices or flash demand. In its FY2026 Form 10-K, Western Digital said the separation better positioned it as a “pure-play HDD company” and described its aim to pursue HDD product development, growth opportunities, operational efficiency, and shareholder value.

Which stocks offer direct or diversified memory exposure?

Company What the stock represents How to use it in a comparison
Sandisk (SNDK) The independent company operating the former WD Flash business, with NAND and storage exposure. The most direct publicly listed flash-memory comparison established here. Its results still reflect multiple end markets and do not make it a pure measure of NAND spot prices.
Micron (MU) A diversified memory and storage portfolio spanning DRAM, NAND, and NOR, as well as components, modules, SSDs, managed NAND, multi-chip packages, and wafers. A broader memory peer. DRAM exposure means its results and cycle may differ from those of a NAND-focused company.
Western Digital (WDC) An HDD business after the February 2025 separation. A useful contrast for storage-infrastructure demand, but not a current flash-memory holding.
Kioxia A flash-memory producer and manufacturing-joint-venture partner of Sandisk. Relevant industry context for shared production and partner exposure. The materials cited here do not establish a matched stock-valuation comparison.

Sandisk and Western Digital’s post-separation results represent different businesses, and their fiscal reporting histories differ. Their headline revenue or margins therefore should not be compared as if they were unchanged segments of one company.

What do Sandisk’s reported results show—and what do they not show?

Sandisk reported FY2026 revenue of $20.248 billion, up 175% year over year. It reported gross margin of 71.5% on a GAAP basis and 71.6% on a non-GAAP basis. Those are company-reported results for the year ended July 3, 2026, not evidence by themselves of a through-cycle growth rate, normal margin, or valuation.

Sandisk reported revenue FY2026 Year-over-year change
Datacenter $5.153 billion Up 437%
Edge $12.160 billion Up 195%
Consumer $2.935 billion Up 29%

For Q4 FY2026, Sandisk reported $8.965 billion in revenue, up 51% sequentially. The company attributed approximately one-third of the sequential increase to higher volume and two-thirds to higher pricing. Its Q4 revenue was $2.977 billion from datacenter, $5.432 billion from edge, and $556 million from consumer. These are quarterly figures, and the reported mix and sequential change should not be assumed to recur.

How do HDD and NAND businesses respond to demand and the cycle?

Western Digital: capacity, cloud demand, and HDD execution

Western Digital reported that cloud-storage demand and AI and hybrid-data workloads benefited its HDD business and accelerated demand for higher-capacity drives. It also described greater manufacturing complexity and longer production lead times for those drives. For WDC, the useful questions are about HDD demand, capacity mix, production execution, suppliers, and customer arrangements—not NAND pricing.

Sandisk: NAND pricing, technology transitions, and manufacturing

Sandisk’s FY2026 Investor Day release framed its strategy around its NAND technology roadmap and customer partnerships. Its disclosed risk factors include average selling-price trends, demand volatility, technology transitions, manufacturing ramps, long-term agreements, and reliance on strategic partners. NAND businesses can be sensitive to shifts in supply and demand: pricing and margins may change materially as industry conditions change.

Micron: memory breadth and potential oversupply

Micron’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes a portfolio spanning DRAM, NAND, and NOR. Its FY2026 Q3 filing warns that increased industry investment could result in DRAM or NAND oversupply if demand does not keep pace, pressuring prices and results. That is a disclosed risk, not a prediction that oversupply will occur.

Kioxia: a partner relationship as well as an industry peer

Sandisk and Kioxia share manufacturing joint ventures, with output shared between them. Kioxia’s annual securities report discusses the relationship and the possibility that disagreements or changes to agreements could affect operations. A comparison of flash companies should therefore account for both competitive product markets and manufacturing relationships that connect companies.

How should investors compare these stocks?

Start by matching the business exposure to the question being asked. For a NAND-focused comparison, examine Sandisk alongside relevant memory peers while distinguishing Micron’s DRAM exposure. Include WDC only if the comparison also considers HDD storage demand and the different factors that drive that business.

  • Compare business mix: Identify the company’s exposure to NAND, DRAM, NOR, or HDDs, then look at end-market contributions and how they change.
  • Separate cycle effects from durable performance: High revenue growth, margins, or selling prices in one period do not establish normal results across a memory or storage cycle.
  • Examine investment and execution needs: Consider manufacturing ramps, technology transitions, production lead times, capital requirements, and supply constraints.
  • Check customer and partner exposure: Long-term agreements, customer arrangements, suppliers, and manufacturing partners can affect flexibility and operating risk.
  • Use same-date, consistently defined valuation data: Potential measures include enterprise value to sales, enterprise value to normalized operating income, free-cash-flow yield, net cash or debt, and capital-expenditure intensity. These are comparison measures, not reported figures here. Peak-cycle margins can distort earnings-based multiples.

No comparable share prices, valuation multiples, or standardized peer metrics on a common date are established in the figures above. Sandisk’s company-reported operating results alone do not show whether its shares—or any of the other stocks—are cheap or expensive.
