How to Remove Moss From a Roof Without Damaging Shingles

For asphalt shingles, check the manufacturer’s instructions first. Oregon State Extension and ARMA recommend different removal approaches, but both warn against pressure washing.

For asphalt or composite shingles, first check the shingle manufacturer’s care and warranty instructions; cleaning methods are not interchangeable across roofs. Oregon State University Extension recommends careful brushing, while the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) recommends a specific bleach treatment followed by low-pressure rinsing. Both warn against pressure washing. Follow the method approved for your roof, avoid forceful scraping, and hire a qualified professional if roof access is unsafe.

Start with the shingle manufacturer’s instructions

Identify the roof material and check the manufacturer’s current care and warranty guidance before choosing a brush, treatment, or rinse. ARMA advises consulting the shingle manufacturer about moss removal and not using other cleaning chemicals or methods without its approval. A method described for asphalt shingles should not be assumed safe for metal, wood, tile, or another roofing material.

Moss can attach to asphalt and metal roofs, lift shingles, and allow water to reach underlying layers, according to Oregon State University Extension’s roof-moss guidance. That makes removal and prevention worthwhile, but the method still needs to suit the roof.

Never pressure wash asphalt shingles

Do not use a pressure washer on asphalt shingles. ARMA warns that pressure washing removes protective granules and can lead to premature roof-system failure. It recommends low-pressure rinsing when following its bleach treatment, not a high-pressure spray.

Choose a removal method approved for your roof

Careful brushing: Oregon State Extension’s approach

Oregon State University Extension’s answer on removing roof moss recommends using a brush or broom. Work gently: the aim is to remove moss without stripping the shingle’s protective granules. Do not treat brushing as universally harmless or scrape hard; follow the roof maker’s instructions, and stop if the shingles are being disturbed.

Bleach treatment: ARMA’s asphalt-roofing approach

For asphalt roofing, ARMA recommends spraying a 50:50 mixture of laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and water, leaving it for 15 to 20 minutes, then thoroughly rinsing with low-pressure water. Do not let the solution dry completely. Protect landscaping and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Moss may loosen over time rather than come off immediately.

This is ARMA’s guidance for asphalt roofing, not a general recipe for every roof, bleach formulation, or concentration. Do not combine it with another treatment or apply it to another material unless that roof’s manufacturer permits it.

Understand treatment options and their limits

Potassium salts of fatty acids

Oregon State Extension describes potassium salts of fatty acids as soap-based products that kill moss by damaging its cell membranes. Its expert answer characterizes them as noncorrosive and as posing minimal risk to people and animals. Check both the product label and roof-manufacturer guidance for compatibility. Avoid overspray on plants; rinse plants accidentally treated and rinse tools after use. The Extension answer, dated June 17, 2026, discusses this treatment for asphalt roofs.

Zinc sulfate

Oregon State Extension discusses zinc sulfate as a roof-moss control option, but warns not to use it where copper gutters, downspouts, or flashing are present because zinc corrodes copper. Follow the product label and the roof manufacturer’s instructions. Extension gives application quantities in its general roof-moss guidance, including discussion of wood roofs; those amounts should not be transferred to another roof material or product label.

Zinc or copper strips

ARMA does not recommend adding zinc or copper strips to an existing asphalt roof. Installation may require exposed nails that can leak or may break the shingle sealant bond, creating a risk of wind damage.

Reduce the conditions that encourage moss

After removal, address shade and debris rather than relying on repeated treatment alone. Oregon State Extension recommends trimming overhanging branches to improve sun exposure, clearing roof debris, and maintaining drainage. Treatments can slow moss development, but Extension describes control as temporary; commercial products may need reapplication. Follow the label for any product you use.

Make roof access a safety decision

Roof moss removal involves fall risk, especially when the surface is wet or slippery. Oregon State Extension advises wearing shoes with strong traction; placing a ladder on stable ground, extending it at least three feet above the roofline, and securing it where possible; and moving tools by bucket and rope instead of carrying them up a ladder. It advises using safety belts and lines on steep roofs, near edges, or where eaves exceed 16 feet.
