A recall covers specific shredded-cheese products associated with Great Lakes Cheese because they may contain metal fragments. It is not a recall of all shredded cheese—or every bag sold under a named brand. Check the package’s UPC and batch or date details against the FDA’s recall event record before deciding whether your bag is included.

Which shredded cheese products are recalled?

Contemporaneous coverage reported that the recall involved more than 1.5 million bags across 64 products. Healthline reported examples sold under Target’s Good & Gather, Walmart’s Great Value, and Aldi’s Happy Farms labels, including shredded mozzarella and cheese blends. These figures and brand examples are reported coverage, not a complete package list independently confirmed from the FDA itemized record.

The FDA event record is the authoritative place to check the current product identifiers. Its event page may not make every item immediately visible in a general view, so use the record’s available product details rather than relying on a headline or brand name.

How to check whether your bag matches

  1. Find the package details. Check the product label for its brand and description, UPC barcode number, and any batch, lot, or date information.
  2. Open the FDA Enforcement Report for event 97827. Compare your package with the listed products and identifiers, especially the UPC and batch or date details.
  3. Decide based on the full match. A familiar brand or similar product description alone does not establish that your bag is recalled. If you cannot confidently determine whether the identifiers match, do not eat the cheese while you check the current notice or contact the retailer.

What to do with a matching package

Do not eat cheese that matches the recall identifiers. The reported instructions are to discard it or return it to the place of purchase, following the current recall notice. If returning it, bring the package or its identifying information so the retailer can assess it; check with that retailer for its current refund process.

Why the cheese was recalled

The stated concern was potential metal fragments. Healthline reported that the FDA classified the recall as Class II, a category associated with a possibility of temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, while serious consequences are considered remote. That classification describes the recall’s risk category; it is not a guarantee about the outcome of any individual exposure.
