The most reliable Thanksgiving grocery list is the one built from your actual menu and guest count—not a fixed list that assumes every table needs turkey, stuffing, and the same sides. Choose your dishes, inventory each recipe, combine duplicate ingredients, and check your pantry before shopping. Use the checklist below as a menu-dependent framework; leave off anything you are not serving.

Start with the menu, guest count, and what you already have

  1. Decide what you are serving. Write down the main dish, sides, bread or stuffing, dessert, and beverages you plan to provide. Mark dishes guests are bringing so you do not shop for them twice.
  2. Collect the recipes. Make an ingredient list for each chosen dish, including garnishes and items used for serving or finishing.
  3. Combine duplicates. Add together the amounts of ingredients used across recipes only after you know the number of diners and how each recipe will be scaled.
  4. Check your cupboards and equipment. Cross off ingredients you already have in usable amounts. Check that you have suitable storage space and a food thermometer; buy one only if you need it.
  5. Plan for leftovers and dietary needs. Decide how much extra food you want and account for guests’ dietary restrictions before finalizing recipes and quantities.

The official food-safety pages linked by FoodSafety.gov’s events and seasons directory do not prescribe a standard Thanksgiving menu or grocery quantity formula. Treat every category below as optional and recipe-dependent.

Thanksgiving grocery checklist by menu category

For each item, write the amount from your recipe after scaling it for your meal. The prompts below are reminders, not a required menu or a set of assumed quantities.

Main dish

  • [ ] Turkey or the main dish you have chosen
  • [ ] Recipe ingredients for seasoning, glazing, or cooking the main dish
  • [ ] Gravy ingredients or prepared gravy, if serving
  • [ ] A digital food thermometer, if you do not already have a suitable food thermometer

If you are buying a frozen turkey, choose its weight early enough to plan a safe thaw. Thawing times and what to do immediately afterward are in the table below.

Produce and vegetable sides

  • [ ] Vegetables, fruit, herbs, and aromatics called for by selected recipes
  • [ ] Produce for salads, relishes, or garnishes, if on your menu
  • [ ] Ingredients for sauces or condiments, if making them

Stuffing, bread, and other starches

  • [ ] Bread, rolls, or other bakery items you plan to serve
  • [ ] Ingredients for stuffing or dressing, only if serving it
  • [ ] Ingredients for other chosen starch sides, such as potatoes, rice, or pasta

Dessert

  • [ ] Ingredients for the dessert or desserts you selected, or the purchased desserts you plan to serve
  • [ ] Toppings or accompaniments called for by the dessert plan

Dairy, pantry staples, and seasonings

  • [ ] Dairy products and eggs called for by your recipes
  • [ ] Cooking fats, stock, flour, sugar, or other pantry ingredients called for by your recipes
  • [ ] Salt, pepper, spices, and herbs called for by your recipes

Do not treat this as a universal pantry list: check the ingredients and quantities in your selected recipes, then check what you already have.

Beverages and serving needs

  • [ ] Beverages you intend to provide
  • [ ] Ice or beverage accompaniments, if needed
  • [ ] Napkins, plates, or other serving supplies you need to provide

Plan frozen-turkey thawing before you shop

CDC guidance dated April 29, 2024 gives three safe thawing approaches. The estimates below apply to turkey; do not thaw it on the counter.

Method Time and handling After thawing
Refrigerator Allow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds of turkey. Keep it refrigerated; it can remain there for 1 to 2 days before cooking.
Cold water Allow about 30 minutes per pound. Keep the turkey in a leakproof bag, submerge it in cold tap water, and change the water every 30 minutes. Cook immediately after thawing.
Microwave Follow the microwave manufacturer’s thawing instructions. Cook immediately after thawing.

These instructions are from the CDC’s “Preparing Your Holiday Turkey Safely,” dated April 29, 2024. Choose the method early enough to fit its timing into your preparation schedule.

Put food safety into the shopping and prep plan

  • Prevent cross-contamination. Keep raw turkey and its juices away from ready-to-eat food. Use a separate cutting board for raw turkey and foods that will not be cooked; wash hands before and after handling raw turkey; and wash preparation surfaces and utensils with hot, soapy water. Do not wash raw turkey.
  • Check doneness with a thermometer. Cook turkey to 165°F, checking the thickest part of the breast, the thigh joint, and the wing joint. Stuffing should also reach 165°F; CDC says cooking stuffing in a casserole is safest. A pop-up timer alone does not replace thermometer checks.
  • Plan leftover storage. Refrigerate leftovers at 40°F or colder within two hours, or within one hour if they have been exposed to temperatures above 90°F. Use cooked turkey and turkey dishes within 3 to 4 days, or freeze them for longer storage. Reheat to 165°F.

These handling, temperature, and storage recommendations come from the CDC’s holiday turkey guidance.
