The U.S. Department of Justice says it forfeited more than $200 million in assets traceable to Backpage’s profits for eligible victim losses. That is the fund amount—not a reported payment to each survivor. DOJ called the program “the largest remission process to date to compensate victims of human trafficking,” but the claim describes a remission process, not a verified record for completed payouts across every U.S. compensation channel. The administrator says petitions and supporting materials are now under review; both submission deadlines have passed.

How much money did Backpage victims receive?

DOJ announced on July 31, 2025, that more than $200 million in assets traceable to Backpage’s profits had been forfeited in December 2024 and made available for eligible victim losses. The announcement does not state an individual award amount or say that survivors have already been paid. The District of Arizona’s case page describes the forfeiture as involving parallel civil and criminal matters; this is a federal remission program, not simply a civil settlement paid directly by the company. The DOJ release also says its Asset Forfeiture Program has returned more than $12 billion in forfeited assets to crime victims since 2000. That is a broad program-wide total, not money paid to Backpage victims.

What does DOJ mean by “largest”?

DOJ described the Backpage Remission Program as “the largest remission process to date to compensate victims of human trafficking.” That is DOJ’s characterization of the process. The official materials reviewed do not establish that it is the largest completed U.S. payout to trafficking victims across restitution, civil litigation, state compensation, and remission programs. The $200 million figure is the forfeited asset pool, not a total of confirmed checks already received by survivors.

Who may be eligible?

The program covers two defined advertising periods. Eligibility is not automatic: petitions and supporting documentation are reviewed through the remission process.

Platform Covered period Losses and applicants
Backpage January 1, 2004–April 6, 2018 The administrator says documented monetary and/or behavioral-health losses may qualify. DOJ’s announcement specifically described financial losses related to trafficking.
CityXGuide April 8, 2018–June 19, 2020 The administrator says documented monetary and/or behavioral-health losses may qualify.

DOJ said petitions could be submitted by victims, representatives, or estates of deceased victims. The program does not mean every person who used either site qualifies; eligibility and documentation are assessed by the administrator. See the official remission administrator, Epiq Global Inc., and the DOJ announcement for program information.

Can someone still file a claim?

No. As of October 4, 2026, the administrator lists March 31, 2026, as the petition deadline and July 31, 2026, as the deadline for supplemental materials. Both dates have passed. The live administrator page says it is reviewing timely petitions and supplemental documentation. DOJ’s original announcement listed February 2, 2026, but the later filing deadline was March 31, 2026, as reported by the Office for Victims of Crime. Check the administrator’s current status page for any process updates; do not rely on the original deadline in the 2025 announcement.

When will payments be made?

The reviewed official program materials give no distribution date and no individual payment amounts. The administrator’s current notice says review is ongoing. Until the process announces awards, it is not possible to say when a particular applicant will receive funds or how much that applicant may receive. Do not treat the forfeited fund total as an equal-share estimate.

Is the Backpage remission program free?

Yes. DOJ and the administrator say victims do not have to pay to participate or receive funds. A demand for money tied to this remission process is a scam warning sign. Use the official administrator website or the DOJ program announcement for official information; paid claim-filing services are not a required part of the program.

Why was Backpage seized?

DOJ says criminals used Backpage from 2004 until April 2018 to facilitate commercial sex and sex trafficking, including trafficking of minors, and that the government seized the site in April 2018. DOJ reports that Backpage, its owners, key executives, and related businesses were found guilty of criminal offenses and sentenced to federal imprisonment. The Postal Inspection Service, FBI, and IRS Criminal Investigation investigated the matter. Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti said Backpage “facilitated the exploitation of women and children as one of the largest online advertisers for commercial sex and sex trafficking over its 14-year existence.” U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine said the site used its position as a leading commercial-sex advertisement website “to make millions of dollars through their corrupt and heinous peddling of people.” DOJ’s announcement
