Valve changed Counter-Strike 2’s Trade Up Contract rules on October 23, 2025, allowing five Covert weapon skins to be exchanged for a knife or gloves. The change reset expectations about how scarce high-tier cosmetics would be—and contemporary reports put the market’s estimated value drop at roughly $2 billion. That figure describes a tracker-based repricing, not audited cash losses or money drained from players’ accounts.
What caused the CS2 skins market crash?
The October 23, 2025 update extended Trade Up Contracts to Covert items, the highest weapon-skin rarity. PC Gamer reproduced Valve’s rule: “five StatTrak Covert items can be exchanged for one StatTrak Knife from a collection of one of the items provided, five regular Covert items can be exchanged for one regular Knife item or one regular Gloves item from a collection of one of the items provided.” PC Gamer’s report on the update
Before the change, buyers and sellers treated knives and gloves as scarce cosmetics with a different path to supply. The new contract created a repeatable route from five eligible Covert skins to one of those items. That altered expectations: if more knives and gloves could be produced, their scarcity premium could fall. Traders also began seeking Covert skins as contract inputs, which could support demand for some of those items.
Contemporary coverage described sharp declines in knife and glove prices alongside rising prices for some Covert skins. These were not uniform moves across every item; skin prices vary by item, collection, condition and market activity. Club386 reported an estimated market-cap decline from $6 billion to $4.1 billion and panic selling, but those figures describe reported snapshots rather than a verified, comprehensive count of every item’s value. Did the CS2 market really lose $2 billion?
“$2 billion wiped out” is a shorthand for a change in estimated aggregate market value. It is not an audited total of cash losses, realized sales, or player account balances. The numbers reported at the time differed:
| Reported estimate | Source and timing | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| From over $6 billion to around $4.25 billion | PriceEmpire figures reported by TalkEsport shortly after the October 2025 update | A tracker-based market-value estimate; the report does not establish an audited valuation or cash proceeds. |
| $1.75 billion in value lost overnight | Bloomberg estimate quoted by PC Gamer in 2025 | A reported overnight change in estimated value; PC Gamer noted the difficulty of assigning a firm total using third-party platforms and traders. |
| $6 billion to $4.1 billion | Club386’s contemporary report | A different reported market-cap snapshot; it should not be treated as directly interchangeable with other trackers’ figures. |
TalkEsport’s report on the PriceEmpire estimate and PC Gamer’s coverage quoting Bloomberg report different figures and snapshots. Differences in timing and tracking methods matter. The sources do not provide enough methodological detail to determine a definitive total, so averaging the estimates would imply more precision than they support.

A market-value estimate can change when listed or estimated prices move, even if no corresponding amount of cash changes hands. It does not tell you how much any one player lost, whether an owner sold, or what a seller could actually receive after fees and marketplace conditions. Individual sale proceeds depend on the item, venue and transaction.
Why did knife and glove prices fall while some skins rose?
The update changed both the expected supply of finished cosmetics and the usefulness of potential inputs. A new production route can lower buyers’ willingness to pay a scarcity premium for knives and gloves. At the same time, Covert skins eligible for contracts can attract buyers who want to use them as inputs. That combination helps explain why reports described declines in some finished items and increases in some inputs, rather than a single market-wide direction.

The contract’s collection rules also matter: the resulting knife or gloves must come from a collection represented among the submitted items. The update therefore changed the supply pathway, not the guarantee that any particular input would produce a specific desirable item or value.
How can I check my CS2 skins’ value?
For an individual item, use a marketplace listing or price-history and inventory-valuation service as an estimate, not a promise of cash-out value. - Check the exact item, including its wear/condition, StatTrak status and any other relevant attributes.
- Compare the same item on the marketplace where you might buy or sell it. Listing prices, completed transactions and third-party inventory estimates can differ.
- Look at recent price history where available, and note when the data was recorded. A price during the immediate reaction to a major update may not represent later trading.
- Do not equate an estimated inventory total with money you can withdraw. The cited value-checking guidance does not establish a guaranteed cash-out amount.
Steam describes Counter-Strike 2 as free-to-play and lists in-game purchases, item drops and weapon cases. These skins are virtual game items, so the headline concerns an in-game cosmetics market, not a public-company valuation or a cash fund. Steam’s Counter-Strike 2 listing

A secondary article published July 4, 2026 cited CSMarketCap for an estimated market capitalization of roughly $7.1 billion and relayed other retrospective estimates. That is evidence that later tracker coverage described a recovery from the low point—not an independently audited valuation, and not a precise market value for October 4, 2026. Valve has also cautioned that market-price movements do not necessarily reveal what players want. In a 2023 PC Gamer interview, the unnamed CS2 development team said: “We generally only look at market prices when we’re thinking about shipping new stuff and want to understand players’ preferences. Players’ interest in items fluctuates over time for many reasons so outside of that context we try not to read too much into temporal changes. And as we were leading up to CS2 we were focused on other areas of the game, so while there may have been lots of interesting things going on in the market, we weren’t paying attention.” PC Gamer’s interview with the CS2 development team
