Yes. Republicans retained control of the U.S. House in the November 5, 2024 elections, completing unified Republican control of the presidency, House and Senate for the 119th Congress (2025–2027). The key figures describe different points in the count: the Associated Press reported on November 14 that Republicans had reached the 218 victories needed for a House majority; Pew Research Center later analyzed the incoming House as 220 Republicans, a five-seat majority.

Did Republicans keep control of the House in 2024?

Yes. The 2024 elections left Republicans in control of the House. On November 14, 2024, the Associated Press reported that Republican victories in Arizona and California brought the party to 218 House victories, the number needed for a majority. The House Clerk’s election-data page links to official candidate vote counts compiled from state and territorial official sources.

The 218 figure marks the majority threshold and the point at which AP reported Republicans had secured control. It is not the same measure as the later estimate of the chamber’s initial party composition when the new Congress convened.

How many seats did Republicans win in the House?

Pew Research Center’s December 17, 2024 analysis said Republicans would begin the 119th Congress with 220 House seats, giving them a five-seat majority. Pew described it as the smallest House majority by number of seats in modern history under its analysis. The 220 figure is a dated count of the incoming Congress, while 218 was the threshold reached in the election results reporting.

What does a GOP trifecta mean?

A GOP trifecta means Republicans hold the presidency and majorities in both chambers of Congress. The House Historian uses the term “unified government” for this configuration: “When the President’s party holds the majority in both chambers, it is considered a unified government.” For the 119th Congress, the Republican House majority joined Republican control of the Senate and presidency.

The House Historian’s chart records 48 unified governments since 1857: 23 Democratic and 25 Republican. Those historical totals describe party alignment across government, not how often a particular party passed its preferred legislation. See the House History, Art & Archives chart for its definition and record.

How narrow was the Republican House majority?

Pew’s five-seat margin made the incoming Republican majority exceptionally close. With so few seats separating the party from the threshold, a small number of members could have considerable influence over party-line votes. The margin was a political constraint, not a guarantee that any particular proposal would fail or pass.

AP’s contemporaneous coverage described thin margins and intraparty tensions. How those dynamics affect a bill depends on members’ positions and attendance, as well as vacancies, Senate rules and other developments. A House majority alone does not ensure that legislation becomes law.

What did Republican leaders say about the result?

After AP reported that Republicans had reached 218 House victories, Speaker Mike Johnson said: “The American people want us to implement and deliver that ‘America First’ agenda.” That was Johnson’s political characterization of the result, not an independently measured finding about voters’ views.
