Those figures describe different things, and the “record” label is a 2023 characterization—not a verified current ranking.
What are the term and reported value of Mulkey’s LSU contract?
The LSU Board of Supervisors’ September 8, 2023 agenda described a proposed new employment agreement for Mulkey with a start date of July 1, 2023, and an end date of June 30, 2033. LSU Athletics’ contract directory subsequently listed a document titled “Kim Mulkey – 07.01.23.pdf.” The board agenda and LSU Athletics contract directory establish the term and the existence of a listed agreement.
UPI reported on September 7, 2023, that the deal was a 10-year, $32 million extension. Its report came before the board’s scheduled consideration, so the $32 million figure should be attributed to UPI’s contemporaneous account rather than treated as the amount stated in the agenda. UPI’s September 7, 2023 report also described the agreement as the most lucrative women’s college basketball contract at that time.
Why are the $3.15 million and $32 million figures different?
The $3,150,000 in the LSU agenda is “Total Certain Compensation” for the first contract year—not the contract’s total value. The agenda defines that term as compensation contractually guaranteed annually in year one. It excludes fringe benefits, including car allowances, and one-time amounts such as buyouts, postseason incentive compensation, and relocation allowances.

The two amounts cannot be compared as if they were competing estimates of the same figure: one is a defined first-year compensation measure, while the other is UPI’s reported full-term value. The agenda’s exclusions also mean the $3.15 million figure does not capture every form of compensation or benefit associated with the agreement.
Does Mulkey’s contract still hold the record?
The available cited reporting supports a narrower statement: UPI called it the most lucrative women’s college basketball contract when it reported the deal in September 2023. It does not establish that the agreement remains the highest-paid or highest-value contract today. That current ranking would require updated, comparable contracts and a consistent measure—such as base salary, guaranteed compensation, or full-term value.

LSU’s current staff page lists Mulkey as head coach and records the Tigers’ 2025–26 season as 29–6, with an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. That is current program context, not evidence of the contract’s present ranking. LSU’s 2026–27 staff page lists the coaching staff and season record.

The LSU agenda and UPI report establish the headline term and compensation figures, but they do not provide a complete year-by-year salary schedule or a verified breakdown of incentives, benefits, buyouts, and termination provisions. LSU’s directory lists a 21-page contract PDF, but those detailed terms should not be inferred from the agenda summary or UPI’s total-value report.
