How to Move Browser Bookmarks to a Read-It-Later App

Export bookmarks as HTML, keep a backup, and confirm your chosen app accepts the file before moving or deleting anything.

To move browser bookmarks to a read-it-later app, export them from your browser as an HTML file, keep a backup, and import that file only if the destination app supports it. Browser export does not guarantee that an app can import the file—or preserve folders, tags, notes, or dates—so check the app’s current instructions and inspect the imported library before deleting anything from your browser.

How do I move bookmarks from my browser to a read-it-later app?

  1. Find the bookmarks in the browser that currently holds them. Open its bookmark manager or library and look for an export option. Menu names vary by browser and version.
  2. Export bookmarks as HTML if your browser offers that format. Chrome documents exporting bookmarks as an HTML file for use elsewhere, and Mozilla documents exporting Firefox bookmarks to HTML for backup or transfer. See Chrome Help and Mozilla Support.
  3. Make a backup copy of the exported file. Store it somewhere you can find it again. Keep the browser’s original bookmarks for now.
  4. Check the destination app’s current import instructions. Confirm that it accepts browser bookmark HTML, and look for details on whether it brings across folders, tags, descriptions, or dates. Those details depend on the app.
  5. Import the file, then inspect the result. Open several representative links and check that folders or other organization you care about appear as expected. If the app shows a bookmark count and your library is large, compare the count as an additional check.
  6. Decide whether to clean up the browser only after checking the destination. Keep the HTML export as a fallback if you may need to restore or move the bookmarks again.

Will the HTML file work with every save-it-later app?

No. Chrome and Firefox document how to export bookmarks, but their instructions do not establish that every reading or bookmarking app accepts the resulting file. Treat HTML as a useful portable export format, not a universal import guarantee. Check the destination app’s own current help before relying on a transfer, especially if preserving folders or metadata matters.

Also distinguish moving an existing bookmark library from saving future articles to read later. A general bookmark manager is designed to organize links; a read-it-later service is centered on collecting web content for later reading. Some people want both functions, but the label “save it later” alone does not confirm that a service can import browser bookmarks.

How should I choose a destination app?

Raindrop.io for organizing links

Raindrop.io describes organizing bookmarks with collections, tags, and notes in its bookmark documentation. Its backup article discusses HTML and CSV backups and importing those formats back into Raindrop. This makes it a relevant option for link organization, but those pages do not establish every current browser-to-Raindrop import detail or which fields will survive your particular transfer. Check its current import flow before proceeding.

Instapaper for a reading queue

Instapaper focuses on saving web content to read later. Its official introduction describes access across the web, iOS, Android, Kindle, and Kobo. That page does not confirm direct import of browser bookmark HTML, so do not assume your existing library can be transferred there without checking Instapaper’s current import instructions.

What should I verify before deleting the original bookmarks?

  • Several imported links open correctly, including links from different folders or categories.
  • Any organization you rely on—such as folders, tags, or notes—appears as expected.
  • The imported library looks complete; compare counts if both the browser export and destination provide them.
  • You still have the exported HTML file saved as a fallback.
