Choose a GIFT City fund by comparing the specific product—not by treating access through a GIFT IFSC account as a recommendation. First confirm that you and the product are eligible; then compare the fund’s mandate, diversification, total costs, liquidity, dealing terms and currency exposure. Separately verify the account and funding route, and assess tax and reporting obligations in every jurisdiction relevant to you. There is no verified, current fund shortlist or comparable fee table here, so no particular ETF or mutual fund can responsibly be named as the best choice.
What a GIFT City account does—and does not—tell you
GIFT IFSC is an access route to financial products and services in India’s International Financial Services Centre. An account does not by itself establish that you qualify for a particular fund, that the fund suits your goals, or that its tax treatment is favorable for you.
IFSCA’s investor guidance describes a general route for NRI and OCI investors involving an IFSC bank account, onboarding with an IFSCA-licensed broker and choosing among products that may include ETFs and funds. Treat this as an orientation, not a guarantee of access. Requirements can depend on your investor category, jurisdiction, provider and the product’s current documents. Confirm them with the regulated institution and the fund manager before transferring money.
Confirm your eligibility and investment route first
Check your investor classification and the product’s own eligibility rules before comparing performance or fees. Do not assume that a route permitted for one investor or fund structure applies to every GIFT IFSC product.

An IFSCA circular dated May 2, 2024 discusses participation by NRI, OCI and resident individuals in certain IFSC-based foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) investing in Indian securities. It describes a route under which those investors may contribute up to 100% of an FPI’s corpus, subject to conditions, including independent investment decisions by the fund manager and pooled investor rights. That is a specific route for qualifying FPI structures—not a blanket permission for any resident individual to buy any GIFT IFSC fund. Ask the provider which route the product uses and whether subsequent implementation or rule changes affect your eligibility.
- Identify the product and its legal structure. Establish whether you are considering an exchange-traded fund, another fund scheme or an investment through an FPI structure. Read the current offer document and provider disclosures.
- Confirm investor eligibility. Ask the provider to confirm in writing that your residency, investor category and jurisdiction are accepted for this specific product.
- Confirm account and broker requirements. Verify which IFSC account and IFSCA-licensed broker or other regulated provider are required, along with onboarding documents and any minimum investment.
- Verify funding and withdrawal mechanics. Confirm the permitted funding route, currencies, transfer and conversion charges, settlement timing, and how redemption proceeds are paid.
Compare the fund’s purpose and portfolio
Start with what the fund is designed to own or track, not its label. IFSCA’s Fund Management Regulations provide for ETFs listed and traded on a recognised exchange and describe equity-index, debt-index, commodity, hybrid and actively managed ETF categories. The equity-index category may replicate an index from IFSC, India or a foreign jurisdiction. These are regulatory structures, not proof that a particular ETF is available to you, well traded, diversified or inexpensive. The cited regulatory copy was amended through July 30, 2025, and IFSCA’s index indicates later amendments; check the current consolidated rules and the fund’s latest offer document.

- Mandate and benchmark: Find out whether the fund tracks an index or is actively managed, what it may hold, and which market or asset class it targets. Check whether its exposure matches your investment goal and time horizon.
- Diversification and concentration: Review holdings, sectors, countries and issuer weights. A fund’s name or ETF structure does not establish that its portfolio is broadly diversified.
- Benchmark fit: Check the benchmark’s market coverage and methodology, and compare it with the exposure you actually want. Two funds with similar names may track different indexes or invest in different assets.
- Risk and disclosure: Read the offer document for investment limits, risks, valuation approach and other material terms. Do not infer safety from a familiar index, exchange listing or regulated location.
Compare dealing, liquidity and total costs
There is no verified current comparison of GIFT IFSC products’ fees, minimums, dealing terms or liquidity in the material available for this article. Obtain those details from each fund’s latest offer documents and provider disclosures; ask the broker for account-level charges. A fund’s stated recurring expense is only one part of what you may pay.
| What to check | ETF | Other fund scheme |
|---|---|---|
| How you deal | Confirm the recognised exchange, broker access, trading hours and available order types. | Confirm dealing frequency, cut-off rules, settlement timing and redemption procedure. |
| Liquidity and execution | Review trading volume and the bid–ask spread; check whether trading hours suit you. | Check the scheme’s redemption terms, any lock-up and any exit charge in its documents. |
| Fund-level costs | Use the latest disclosed recurring expenses and any other fund charges. | Use the latest disclosed recurring expenses and any other fund charges. |
| Account and transaction costs | Ask about brokerage, custody, platform, foreign-exchange, transfer and transaction charges. | Ask about platform, custody, foreign-exchange, transfer and transaction charges. |
Do not compare headline expense figures as if they were the full cost. Ask for the applicable amount, currency, frequency and conditions for each charge, and determine whether it is paid to the fund, broker, bank or another provider. For an ETF, a wide bid–ask spread can affect execution even when its recurring expense looks low. For a scheme, dealing frequency and redemption terms can matter if you may need access to the money.

Check currency exposure and settlement
Distinguish the currency in which you subscribe, receive distributions or redeem from the currencies of the fund’s underlying assets. Currency conversion can change your result: a rise in the unit price does not alone determine what you receive after conversion into your home currency. Ask the provider what conversion rates and charges apply, whether the fund has any currency-hedging policy, and how and when proceeds are settled.
Assess tax and reporting for your own circumstances
Do not treat a general statement about GIFT IFSC tax advantages as proof that your investment, distributions, redemptions or gains are tax-free. IFSCA’s NRI investor guidance advises readers to assess their personal tax position, particularly if they live in a country that taxes worldwide income. Your outcome can depend on your tax residence, the fund structure and the nature and timing of income, as well as the rules and reporting duties in each relevant jurisdiction. Seek jurisdiction-specific tax advice before investing if the treatment is unclear.

IFSCA’s January–March 2025 bulletin says the Finance Act 2025 allowed tax-neutral relocation to retail funds or ETFs in IFSC under sections 47(viiac) and 47(viiad). That statement concerns qualifying relocation under specified provisions. It does not establish that an ordinary purchase, redemption, distribution or gain is tax-free for every investor. Confirm whether a particular provision applies to your transaction and circumstances.

Once eligibility is confirmed, compare only products you can actually access. Use each product’s current offer document, the latest provider disclosures and written responses from the account provider for any terms that are not clear. If key information is unavailable or cannot be confirmed, pause rather than filling gaps with assumptions.

- Helpful in various ways
- Does the fund’s mandate and benchmark fit your goal?
- Do its holdings and concentration match the level and kind of risk you intend to take?
- Can you identify the fund’s recurring expenses and all material account, trading, currency and transfer costs?
- Do the dealing and redemption arrangements fit your expected holding period and possible need for cash?
- Have the provider and fund manager confirmed your eligibility, access route, funding method and minimums?
- Have you considered the tax and reporting rules where you are resident, rather than relying on a general IFSC tax claim?
This framework can narrow a shortlist, but it is not a ranking or recommendation of named funds. The available evidence does not establish a live head-to-head comparison or support an investor-specific choice.
