To check another business’s GST registration and available return-filing record, use the GST Portal’s pre-login Search Taxpayer feature with its GSTIN or UIN. To check your own return, log in and go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. These checks show portal records; a registration status or filing history is not, by itself, proof that a business meets every tax, legal, or commercial obligation.
Choose the right GST check
| What you want to check | Who the record belongs to | Login | What you need | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Registration details and public filing history | Another taxpayer | No | GSTIN or UIN; select a financial year to view filing entries | Search Taxpayer |
| Your return’s status | Your own account | Yes | Financial year and filing period | Returns Dashboard |
| Registration application progress | An application you submitted | Use the application-tracking workflow | Application Reference Number (ARN) sent after successful submission | Track Application Status |
The first workflow checks an issued taxpayer registration; application tracking is for a registration request still in progress. GSTN also describes searching by PAN in its Welcome Kit. Use the identifier and options currently offered by the portal.
How to check if a GST number is active
- Open the official GST Portal and select Search Taxpayer.
- Enter the business’s GSTIN or UIN and complete the displayed captcha, then select Search.
- Review the returned taxpayer and registration details, including GSTIN/UIN, legal name, trade name, effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, and cancellation date if applicable.
The GSTN guide describes taxpayer lookup as a way to verify a GSTIN and avoid dealing with a fraudulent GSTIN. Confirm that the identifying details match the business you intend to deal with; the search result reflects portal-record information, not an independent check of the business’s broader conduct.
How can I check GST return filing status by GSTIN?
- Use Search Taxpayer and search for the GSTIN or UIN as above.
- Select Show Filing Table.
- Choose the financial year and search to display the available return-filing details for that year.
The portal manual says the filing table can show monthly or quarterly filing frequency where that feature applies. Check the periods and entries shown rather than assuming that a visible filing history covers every obligation or period.

How do I check my GST return status online?
- Log in to the GST Portal.
- Open Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard.
- Select the financial year and filing period, then search.
- Review the tile for the return you filed. The GST Portal’s GSTR-3B guide says the status becomes Filed after successful filing; it also provides an option to view or download the filed return.
Viewing GSTR-2B
For eligible normal, SEZ, and casual taxpayers, the portal FAQ says a generated period’s GSTR-2B can be viewed or downloaded through Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard > File Returns, using the GSTR-2B tile. This tile is specific to the stated taxpayer types and generated periods; it may not appear for every account.

Registration and filing records
The public search displays selected identity, registration, and return-filing details. It can help establish what the portal shows for the registration and periods selected, but it does not certify complete compliance with every tax, legal, or commercial requirement.

Compliance rating and additional profile details
The GST Portal taxpayer-search manual describes a compliance rating on a 0-to-10 scale, with factors including timely filing, tax payment, and penalties. Treat it as a portal-described indicator, not a guarantee of supplier quality or low risk. The manual also lists additional profile information available after login, including proprietor, director, or promoter names, e-way bill history, annual aggregate turnover, and the percentage of tax paid in cash. See the GST Portal Search Taxpayer manual for its description of these fields.

If you cannot log in or find a result
- Login is denied: GSTN’s Known Issues & Suggested Solutions recommends first checking status through the pre-login Search Taxpayer bar. If the search shows active or cancelled status and access still fails, the guide says to raise a ticket; for inactive status, it directs users to contact the jurisdictional officer.
- Your registration application is pending: Use Services > Registration > Track Application Status, rather than searching as though an issued GSTIN already exists. GSTN says an ARN is sent after successful application submission.
- A filing entry or dashboard tile is absent: Confirm the selected financial year and filing period, and whether the feature applies to your taxpayer type or generated period. The public filing table and the logged-in dashboard serve different purposes.
