The IRS lists 21 distinct 1099 designations for tax year 2025 in its e-file information, while separate IRS instructions also describe Form 1099-H. Counting that form brings the total to 22, but “22 types” is not a timeless or exhaustive IRS count. Which form you receive depends on the payment or transaction—not simply on your job or income level.
What is a 1099 form?
A 1099 is an information return used to report a particular kind of payment, distribution, or transaction to the IRS and the person or business involved. Its suffix identifies the category: for example, 1099-INT reports interest income, while 1099-NEC concerns nonemployee compensation. The form reports information; it does not, by itself, determine whether an amount is taxable or how you must report it. Check the instructions for the specific form and tax year. The IRS general instructions direct filers to the separate instructions for individual forms.
How many types of 1099 forms are there?
It depends on what is being counted. The IRS page for tax year 2025 e-file information returns lists 21 distinct 1099 designations. The list does not include 1099-H, although IRS instructions for 2025 describe Form 1099-H for Health Coverage Tax Credit (HCTC) advance payments. Counting the separately documented 1099-H gives 22 forms, but that is not the same as saying the current e-file list contains 22. The IRS e-file list is the relevant reference for its tax-year-2025 availability; the 2025 general instructions include 1099-H.
Forms also differ in how commonly they affect taxpayers and how they are filed. The list below is a guide to the event each form covers, not a claim that every taxpayer is likely to receive every form.

These descriptions summarize the IRS payment-to-form mappings; they do not replace the instructions for a form or establish the tax treatment of a particular transaction. See the IRS general instructions and its instructions for individual forms.
Which 1099 form will you get?
Start with what happened during the tax year. The payer, broker, or other reporting organization generally selects a form according to the transaction and applicable reporting rules. You may receive no 1099, one, or several from different payers. Use the form title and tax year to identify what is being reported, then review the payer information and boxes before deciding how it affects your return.

- Bank or investment income: Interest may appear on 1099-INT; dividends or other distributions on 1099-DIV; and certain broker transactions on 1099-B. Digital asset proceeds reported by a broker are associated with 1099-DA.
- Work or other payments: Nonemployee compensation may be reported on 1099-NEC. Other specified payments, such as certain rents or prizes, may fall under 1099-MISC.
- Government payments: Certain refunds or other government payments may be reported on 1099-G.
- Retirement or medical-account withdrawals: A distribution may be reported on 1099-R or 1099-SA, depending on the account and transaction.
- Property, debt, or insurance events: A real estate transaction, canceled debt, secured-property event, or life insurance transaction may relate to 1099-S, 1099-C, 1099-A, or one of the specialized life-insurance forms.
The form number is a starting point, not a substitute for the underlying facts. For example, a 1099-K reports settlement transactions; it does not establish that every amount shown is profit or taxable income.
What is the difference between 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-B, and 1099-DA?
These forms cover different reporting categories and should not be treated as interchangeable just because more than one may relate to income or proceeds.

- 1099-NEC is for reportable nonemployee compensation.
- 1099-MISC covers specified other payment categories, such as certain rents, prizes, and awards.
- 1099-B covers broker-reported transactions and barter exchange income.
- 1099-DA covers digital asset proceeds reported by brokers and appears in the IRS tax-year-2025 e-file list.
Use the applicable form instructions and the transaction records to understand what was reported; the form label alone does not settle the tax treatment.
Do businesses have to issue 1099 forms?
Business reporting duties depend on the payment, recipient, form, tax year, and applicable rules. There is no single threshold that applies to every 1099. The IRS’s business information-return guidance gives examples including interest on business debt that may be reported on 1099-INT, dividends or shareholder distributions that may be reported on 1099-DIV, and direct sales of at least $5,000 of consumer products to a buyer for resale outside a permanent retail establishment under 1099-MISC. The $5,000 figure applies to that stated direct-sales category, not to all 1099 reporting.

The same IRS guidance notes a situation in which backup withholding can require a business to file Form 1099-NEC regardless of the payment amount. Check the form-specific instructions for the tax year and payment type rather than relying on a general rule of thumb.
The IRS’s 2026 Publication 1099 says thresholds for certain payments reported on certain information returns change for tax years beginning after 2025. It identifies a $2,000 threshold for certain payments, not a universal threshold for all 1099 forms or payments.

What should you do if a 1099 is wrong?
- Compare it with your records. Check the tax year, payer, amount, and relevant transaction documents or account statements.
- Contact the issuer. If the amount or other information appears incorrect, ask the payer or reporting organization about a correction. Do not assume the form can simply be ignored.
- Use the right instructions for your situation. The correction and tax-reporting steps can differ by form and facts. Consult that form’s instructions and consider qualified tax help if the discrepancy is unresolved or materially affects your return.
How should you use a 1099 when filing your taxes?
Keep each 1099 with the records for the payment or transaction it reports. Read the specific form’s boxes and instructions, then determine how the underlying event belongs on your return. A 1099 is information supplied to you and the IRS, not a complete tax calculation. Tax treatment depends on the form, transaction, and applicable tax-year rules.
Thresholds and procedures vary by form. The IRS’s general instructions point to separate instructions for individual forms, so use the instructions for the form and year at issue rather than carrying a rule from another 1099 category into your situation.
How do paper 1099 filings work?
For covered paper information returns, the IRS general instructions say Form 1096 is required as a transmittal document for each type of return. The IRS also says official printed versions can be ordered. Businesses deciding how to submit returns should check the current IRS filing guidance and use official forms where required; do not assume a generic store-bought form is an official IRS version. See Publication 1099 and the IRS information-return guidance.
