Jennifer Tilly has said her divorce settlement gave her a share of income connected to The Simpsons. Reports about court documents say that interest continued after her former husband, co-creator Sam Simon, died in 2015, with a later arrangement addressing how payments were administered. That is different from saying she inherited the money from Simon’s will: the available accounts describe an interest established through the divorce, not a new inheritance.
What Tilly has said about the settlement
Tilly and Simon were married from 1984 to 1991, according to Bravo. In a 2024 account of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Tilly said: “And then when we got divorced I got a piece of The Simpsons in the divorce settlement, and nobody knew that The Simpsons was going to go on for trillions of years.”
Bravo also reported that, during a November 2021 appearance on Los Angeles Magazine’s “The Originals” podcast, Tilly characterized her share as about one-third of Simon’s ongoing Simpsons earnings. That is her public description; it should not be treated as a verified formula from the settlement itself.
Why payments reportedly continued after Simon died
Simon died in 2015. Secondary accounts describing court documents say the divorce judgment, signed in 1993, gave Tilly a community-property interest in Fox payments associated with Simon. They also report that after his death, Tilly reached an arrangement with Simon’s estate or trustee about payment administration, preserving the rights and obligations of the divorce judgment.
#1 Best Overall
The distinction matters: on this account, the underlying interest came from the divorce settlement, while the later arrangement dealt with administering payments after Simon’s death. The reports do not establish that Simon’s will newly granted Tilly this income. The underlying judgment and later agreement are not available in the cited reporting for independent review, so their exact terms and legal classification cannot be confirmed here.
What the arrangement does—and does not—establish
- Established by Tilly’s reported comments: She says the divorce settlement gave her a piece of The Simpsons, and she described it as roughly one-third of Simon’s ongoing show earnings.
- Reported from court-document coverage: The divorce judgment created an interest in Fox payments, and a later arrangement addressed payment administration following Simon’s death.
- Not independently verified: The precise payment calculation, contractual wording, routing mechanics, and legal characterization. Those would require the primary judgment and later agreement.
- Not supported by these accounts: Treating the continuing payments as a new inheritance or gift under Simon’s will.
Why Tilly says the income changed her finances
Bravo quoted Tilly describing the practical effect: “I used to do a lot of movies because the roof was leaking, or to pay for the plumbing, and now I don’t have to.” She also said, “So every day, honestly, every day I’m like, ‘Thank you, Sam,’” reflecting her gratitude for the continuing financial benefit.
