UPI QR Code vs. Payment Link: What Should a Small Business Use?

Use a merchant UPI QR for customers paying in person and a UPI payment link for remote requests. Businesses handling both types of orders may use both, depending on provider support and terms.

Use a merchant UPI QR code when a customer is in front of you and can scan it; use a UPI payment link when you need to request payment remotely. If your business serves both walk-in and remote customers, both can make sense. There is no established universal winner for cost, speed, or payment success: compare the actual features and terms offered to your business.

How a merchant QR code and a payment link work

UPI QR code

A merchant QR is a code a customer scans in a UPI app to start a payment. NPCI says QR codes can contain merchant information such as the merchant UPI ID and amount, which the customer can see on the payment screen. For merchant acceptance, NPCI says businesses should onboard through an acquiring bank, which provides UPI infrastructure. See the NPCI UPI FAQ.

UPI payment link

A payment link is a URL the business sends to a customer. The customer opens it to enter a payment flow; available methods and delivery channels depend on the provider and its configuration. Razorpay documents UPI payment links sent by SMS that let customers choose an available UPI app, while its dashboard guide describes setting an amount and optional email or phone notifications. Cashfree describes sharing UPI links over WhatsApp. See Razorpay’s UPI Payment Links guide, Razorpay’s Payment Link creation guide, and Cashfree’s UPI documentation.

Choose based on how the customer pays

Customer situation Good starting point Why
At a shop counter, service desk, or stall Merchant QR The customer is present to scan a displayed code in a UPI app. Use the QR and acceptance setup supplied for your merchant account.
Ordered remotely or needs to pay from a message Payment link You can send a URL to the customer. Check which channels—such as SMS, email, or messaging apps—your provider supports.
Website or app checkout Compare supported checkout flows Providers may support QR, app intent, links, or other methods. The right option depends on the customer’s device and your integration.
Both walk-in and remote orders Potentially both A QR can serve the physical point of sale and links can serve remote orders or invoices, if your setup and provider terms support both.

These are practical choices based on the documented customer journeys, not an NPCI ranking of payment methods.

Check how the amount is handled

QR behavior can differ. Cashfree describes its static QR as accepting any amount and its dynamic QR as carrying a predefined amount for an individual transaction. A predefined amount can reduce entry for that transaction; a QR that accepts any amount suits variable totals but means the customer must enter or confirm the amount. These are Cashfree’s product descriptions, not a guarantee of how every bank or provider’s QR works. Confirm the behavior of your own merchant account.

Confirm onboarding and operating details

NPCI says a merchant should partner with an acquiring bank to enable UPI; the bank provides infrastructure and handles merchant onboarding. NPCI lists QR, intent, application-based, and collect as integration modes. It also says the bank assigns the merchant category code during onboarding. Settlement follows the relevant account arrangement; check its terms rather than assuming all providers handle it identically. NPCI’s UPI FAQ explains merchant onboarding and acceptance.

Before adopting either method, ask your bank or provider:

  • Which merchant QR modes and shareable payment-link types are enabled for your account?
  • Can a link have a fixed amount, expiry, reference, partial-payment option, or customer notifications? Razorpay documents these configuration fields, but they are not universal features.
  • How will you match each payment to an order or invoice, and what confirmation will you receive?
  • What are the fees, settlement terms, refund process, failed-payment handling, eligibility rules, and customer-support arrangements in your actual merchant agreement?
  • Does your QR display material meet the provider’s current branding and scanning requirements?

For relevant merchant QR designs, NPCI’s June 2026 BHIM UPI merchant QR guideline specifies the instruction “Scan & Pay with any UPI app.” Follow the applicable guidance for the QR material supplied or approved for your business.

Compare the actual offer, not the payment labels

No head-to-head evidence establishes that QR codes or payment links are universally cheaper, faster, or more reliable. Compare the provider-specific terms and workflow on the factors that affect your business:

  • Whether the customer pays in person or remotely.
  • Whether the amount is variable or set in advance.
  • Whether payments can carry order-level references and be reconciled easily.
  • Which channels deliver a link and how payment confirmation or failure is communicated.
  • Fees, settlement, refunds, eligibility, and support under your merchant agreement.

A tabletop stand or sign can display a merchant-generated QR for customers at a physical point of sale. The stand only displays the code: it does not generate a valid merchant QR, onboard your business, or process payments. NPCI refers to merchant QR standees and stickers in its guidance for QR materials.
