How to Make Social Media Accounts Private Without Hiding Professional Information

Make social accounts more private by controlling posts, profile details, tags and interactions separately—while preserving a deliberate professional presence.

You can limit who sees personal posts without making every professional detail inaccessible—but there is no single privacy switch that does both. Set audience controls for posts, stories, tags, comments and messages separately, then leave only the professional information you want people to find visible. LinkedIn needs a different approach: its public-profile controls affect visibility outside LinkedIn, not general visibility to signed-in members.

Decide what should remain findable

Before changing settings, identify the smallest set of details someone needs to verify or contact you professionally. That might be your name, role, portfolio, selected work samples or a work-appropriate contact route. Make those details available to the intended audience; do not assume that a public personal account is necessary for professional discovery.

Review profile fields separately from posts. Remove or limit personal contact details, birth date, home location and other sensitive information that does not serve a professional purpose. LinkedIn says members are not required to include sensitive data on their profiles, and its Contact Info section has visibility rules distinct from the rest of a profile. LinkedIn explains what people can see on your profile.

Use the right control for each kind of visibility

Privacy settings usually govern different surfaces rather than one unified audience. When reviewing an account, distinguish:

  • Audience: Everyone, platform members, approved followers or friends, or only you.
  • Content: Profile fields, posts, stories, photos, reels or videos may each have separate visibility.
  • Interaction: Comments, mentions, tags, messages and follower approval can have their own controls.
  • Discovery and reuse: Search engines, third-party services, downloads and reposting may extend visibility beyond the app.

A private setting can reduce exposure, but it does not necessarily hide profile details, other people’s posts or copies of material already seen by others.

Facebook: narrow posts and review tags

Open Settings & privacy and review the categories under Audience and visibility. Facebook lists controls for profile details, how people find and contact you, posts, stories, pages, reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. Available controls can vary with profile type. Facebook Help explains how to view and adjust privacy settings.

Choose an audience for posts

Use the audience selector when publishing so each post goes to the intended group. Facebook describes options such as everyone, friends or a specific audience. Review older posts as well; changing a default for future posts does not necessarily change the audience of everything already shared. Meta’s privacy guidance also points to activity-review tools.

Review profile and tagging controls

Check whether tagged posts require review before they appear on your profile, and adjust who can see posts on your profile. A post made on someone else’s profile remains subject to that profile owner’s audience settings; people tagged in it may see it along with their friends. Tag review can limit what appears on your profile, but it cannot make another person’s post private.

Account for public profile photos and search remnants

Facebook says the current profile picture and cover photo are public. Choose those images with that audience in mind. A change to privacy settings also does not guarantee immediate removal of old results from search engines: cached or previously indexed material may persist. Facebook’s privacy troubleshooting guidance discusses these limits.

Instagram: separate a personal audience from a professional presence

Meta says Instagram can allow anyone to follow an account or require approval for new followers. Review follower approval alongside controls for tags and mentions, then check the visibility of each kind of content and profile information in the app. Meta’s privacy tools guidance links to Instagram privacy and tag-management resources.

If professional discovery matters, decide whether to keep selected professional content public or use a purposeful professional account, while restricting personal content where the current controls permit. Do not assume a private-account setting preserves every profile element or a public contact route. Preview what a visitor can see after making changes.

LinkedIn: public-profile settings do not hide you from members

LinkedIn is better treated as a professional profile with visibility controls than as a fully private social account. LinkedIn says profiles are generally fully visible to signed-in members. Its public-profile settings govern a different surface: what can appear outside LinkedIn, including in search engines, and which profile sections are exposed. Turning off the public profile can reduce visibility to people outside the service; it does not make the full profile invisible to logged-in LinkedIn members. LinkedIn’s profile-visibility help page describes these distinctions.

Keep selected professional details visible

Review profile and privacy preferences for posts and shares, profile photo, last name and birth date, as well as the public-profile section settings. You can limit individual sections or turn off the public profile. Contact information in Contact Info is generally visible only to first-degree connections, subject to LinkedIn’s stated exceptions; websites, blogs or social handles may be visible to all members. Check each field rather than treating the whole profile as one audience.

Consider copies and connected services

Depending on settings, a version of your profile may appear in search engines, mail or calendar mini-profiles, aggregators, talent or lead tools, or PDF printouts. Review the public view after edits and avoid including sensitive personal details simply because a field is available.

TikTok: choose between account privacy and post-level audiences

TikTok offers public and private account modes. With a private account, you approve followers who can watch videos or LIVE videos and see follower and following lists; other people cannot Duet, Stitch or download your videos. TikTok also allows audience choices on individual posts, including everyone, friends or followers, or private. Separate controls cover comments and direct messages. See TikTok’s Privacy Centre guide to privacy tools.

If professional reach is important, decide whether a selected public post or separate public professional channel suits that goal, while restricting personal posts and interactions. Public content may be visible or shared off-platform depending on settings; platform controls cannot prevent every copy or redistribution.

A practical privacy review

  1. Define the professional route: Decide which details—such as your role, portfolio or work contact—need to be findable and by whom.
  2. Audit profile fields: Review personal contact details, birth date, location and sensitive information independently of post settings.
  3. Set future audiences: Choose a narrower audience for posts and stories where appropriate, then review older content with the platform’s activity or audience tools.
  4. Check tags and mentions: Turn on review before tagged content appears on your profile where available, and remember that the original poster controls their post’s audience.
  5. Limit unwanted interaction: Review follower approval, comments, messages, mentions and blocking options.
  6. Preview as a visitor: Use the platform’s public-view option when available, or check from a logged-out browser. Confirm that the professional information you intend to share is accessible and personal material is not exposed as expected.
  7. Recheck after changes: Repeat the review after platform updates, account-type changes or a shift in your career needs; menu names and availability can vary.
