To return an eligible Amazon.com order in the United States, open Your Orders, select the item, choose Return or replace items (if shown), and follow the options for that specific return. Check the displayed return-by date and instructions: eligibility, packaging, drop-off methods, and any fees can vary by item, seller, and reason.
How to start an Amazon return
- Open Your Orders. Sign in to the Amazon account used for the purchase and find the item.
- Choose the return option. Select the item and start its return or replacement flow. If no return option appears, check the item’s eligibility and order details.
- Choose a reason. Select the reason that accurately describes the return.
- Select the available resolution and method. Choose a refund or replacement if Amazon offers it, then pick from the methods shown for that item.
- Follow the confirmation instructions. Note the return-by date and any label, packaging, or drop-off requirements. Keep the confirmation until the refund or replacement is resolved.
Amazon Customer Service says return options may differ depending on the seller, item, or reason. The order-specific flow is the best guide to what is available for your return. Amazon’s return instructions explain the process.
Where to drop off a return—and whether you need a box
Some eligible returns offer a QR-code option at a designated drop-off location. If you select that method, Amazon says to take the item and QR code to the location shown; no shipping box is needed for that method. The option is not available for every item or location, so select only a location and method offered in the return flow.
Amazon’s policy page states that more than 8,000 locations accept free returns for most items, but that figure is Amazon’s published count, not a guarantee that a nearby location will accept a particular return. Confirm the location and any packaging instructions in your order’s return options. Amazon’s return policy describes eligibility and exceptions.

How long you have to return an item
Amazon’s general policy says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery if they are in original or unused condition. Exceptions include shorter and longer windows, non-returnable categories, and final-sale items. Treat 30 days as a general rule, not a promise that every purchase qualifies.
Amazon’s policy gives examples of other windows: seven days for certain accidental digital purchases; 15 days for specified new Apple and Boost Infinite products and certain Amazon Haul items; 90 days for select Renewed conditions, most nonperishable baby products, and mattresses other than crib mattresses; 180 days for some wedding-registry gifts; and 365 days for some baby-registry gifts and Premium Renewed items. These are category examples, and the actual deadline for an order may differ.

Check the product detail page before buying and the order history after purchase. For an existing order, rely on the return-by date shown in Order History or in the return confirmation rather than calculating from the general window. Amazon’s live policy and help pages do not show publication dates, and their wording may change.
Potential return fees and deductions
A return is not necessarily free, and the refund may not always equal the full purchase price. Amazon’s policy describes possible return-shipping charges when you choose a non-free method, return a heavy or bulky item, or have an unusually high return rate. It also describes late, damage, and restocking fees in certain categories or circumstances. Check the amount and terms presented for your order before completing the return.

For its return policy, Amazon defines a heavy or bulky item as one weighing at least 50 lb, with a packed longest side over 59 in, or with girth over 130 in. Special pickup arrangements or fees may apply. This is Amazon’s policy definition, not a general shipping standard. The policy also describes late fees of 20% or 100% for specified periods after the return-by date; check the current policy and your return confirmation for the applicable circumstances.
When to expect an Amazon refund
First, Amazon or the seller must receive the return and determine that it meets the applicable conditions. Amazon says receipt and processing can take up to 30 days in certain cases, and longer timelines are possible. Once a refund is issued, the time for funds to appear depends on the payment method and financial institution.

These are estimates published by Amazon.com; its refund help page does not state a publication year, and the estimates are not guarantees. For a return from the last three months, check Your Returns. You can also use the Return/Refund Status link in the confirmation email. Amazon may issue an advanced refund when the carrier first scans a return, but says it can charge the customer if the item is not returned by the stated deadline or does not meet the return conditions. Amazon’s refund help page provides the estimates and status guidance.

If a third-party seller shipped the item from its own inventory, the return goes to the seller rather than to Amazon. Submit the return request through the order and follow the seller-specific instructions. The seller reviews the request before issuing a refund or replacement.

If a problem arises, contact the seller through the order page. Amazon describes the A-to-z Guarantee as a possible route for qualifying cases, subject to its current conditions. For a higher-value return, Amazon’s seller-return guidance recommends a trackable shipping method. Transit time, tracking, and the condition of the item can affect processing. Amazon’s third-party seller return guidance explains the seller process and escalation options.
Amazon Seller Central described a refund-at-first-scan policy on April 15, 2025, for eligible seller-fulfilled returns using a prepaid Amazon label. That seller-facing policy helps explain why a refund notification might arrive before the seller receives the item, but it does not mean every seller return is refunded at first scan. Amazon Seller Central’s announcement describes that policy.
What if you mean a holiday purchase made in 2025?
Amazon Seller Central announced that eligible purchases made November 1 through December 31, 2025, could be returned through January 31, 2026, with an earlier January 15, 2026, deadline for Apple-brand products. Both deadlines have passed. The announcement said normal eligibility rules still applied; those dates do not apply to current purchases. Amazon Seller Central’s holiday announcement contains the historical dates.
