Neither crypto remittances nor traditional international money transfers are always cheaper or faster. The better choice depends on the exact sending country, receiving country, amount, provider, payout method and what the recipient can actually access. Compare current quotes by the amount the recipient will receive—not just the advertised fee—and include exchange-rate costs, cash-out options and practical risks.
What makes this a route-by-route decision?
A transfer has to do more than cross a border: the recipient needs to be able to use the value. A conventional service may offer a bank deposit, cash pickup or mobile-money payout, depending on the route and provider. With crypto, a blockchain transfer does not by itself ensure that the recipient can convert the asset to local currency or spend it locally.
Costs also vary between corridors. The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide page reports a 6.36% global average and lists Q3 2025 as its latest report; the page was last updated August 18, 2025. That is a dated benchmark, not a current quote for any particular route. The World Bank Data Catalog describes a separate dataset updated in September 2026, covering 377 corridors across 48 sending countries and 111 receiving countries. Its metadata notes that non-transparent services are excluded from global-average calculations. Neither resource provides a like-for-like crypto quote comparison.
For broader context, the BIS paper Cross-border payments: what are the issues? by Stijn Claessens and Tara Rice states that “Cross-border payments (XBP), particularly remittances and retail transactions, remain more costly, slower, less accessible, and less transparent than domestic payments.” The authors note that the paper’s views do not necessarily reflect those of the BIS or its member central banks. The paper describes a broad infrastructure problem, not a claim that every traditional transfer is worse than every crypto transfer.

Is sending money with crypto cheaper than a money transfer service?
There is no universal winner. A traditional provider’s headline fee may not include the full cost of the exchange rate it offers. A crypto transfer can involve network or platform fees, and the recipient may face costs or practical barriers when converting or using the asset. The asset’s value may also move while the transfer is underway.
Ask each provider for a quote for the same amount, route and payout timing. Compare the amount the recipient is expected to receive after all sender and recipient charges. Where available, distinguish the stated transfer fee from the exchange rate and any FX spread. For crypto, include acquisition and network costs, platform fees, and any conversion or cash-out charges that apply to the recipient.

Historical benchmarks show why route-specific quotes matter, but they are not current offers:
| Benchmark | What it measures | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 6.36% global average | World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide page; latest report listed there is Q3 2025, and the page was last updated August 18, 2025. | A dated global average for remittances, not a live price for your transfer or a crypto comparison. |
| $12.50, or 6.25%, to send $200 | IMF figure for Q1 2023. | A historical average. The IMF also described the G20/SDG target as a 3% global average by 2030, with no corridor above 5%. |
| 6.4% average; digital remittances 5% and non-digital 7% | World Bank figures for Q4 2023, released in June 2024. | A historical comparison of digital and non-digital remittances, not a current quote or a comparison with crypto. |
The IMF has also noted that exchange-rate margins and differences between corridors affect costs. A lower advertised fee does not necessarily mean the recipient gets more.

Which is faster for an international transfer?
Do not assume that a crypto transfer will arrive sooner in a useful form, or that every conventional transfer will be slow. The relevant time is when the recipient can access and use the money—not only when a blockchain transaction is recorded or a provider marks a transfer as sent.
For each option, check the provider’s stated delivery estimate for the exact route and payout method. Ask whether the estimate depends on business hours, recipient verification, a bank or mobile account, or a conversion step. The available evidence does not establish a universal speed ranking or a reliable timing estimate for a particular corridor.

Can the recipient cash out or use crypto locally?
That depends on local access, not merely on whether the recipient can receive a crypto transfer. IMF analysis identifies price volatility, reliance on internet access and difficulty converting bitcoin into local currency or goods in less developed areas as disadvantages. Before choosing crypto, confirm that the recipient can access the relevant service, complete any required identity checks, convert the asset if needed, and withdraw or spend the proceeds.
Also establish who controls the asset during the transfer, which fees apply at each step, and what happens if the recipient cannot complete a conversion. Do not treat a quoted blockchain fee as the full cost of a usable remittance.

What should you compare before sending?
Use the same amount, route and intended delivery window for both options. Record the quote details before committing; rates and provider availability can change.
- Recipient’s net amount: Ask what the recipient will actually receive after sender fees, recipient fees and conversion.
- Exchange rate: Compare the rate with a reference rate if available, and identify any FX spread separately from the stated fee.
- Delivery to usable funds: Check the expected time until the recipient can access, withdraw or spend the value, including any business-hour or payout-method conditions.
- Payout and access: Confirm which options are available on this route—bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile money or crypto-to-local-currency conversion—and whether the recipient meets account, identity and internet requirements.
- Failure handling: Ask the provider how errors are resolved, whether a transfer can be reversed, how to reach support and what consumer protections apply in the relevant jurisdictions.
- Crypto-specific costs and exposure: Include asset-price movement during the transfer, network and platform fees, custody arrangements, and the recipient’s actual ability to convert or spend the asset.
Availability, recourse and protections depend on the provider and jurisdiction. BIS supervisory guidance describes variation in how countries oversee cross-border payment providers, so rules in the sender’s country should not be assumed to apply to the recipient’s country.
How common is crypto for cross-border payments?
Crypto remains a small fraction of the cross-border payment market, despite a recent surge, according to IMF Working Paper 2025/120. The paper estimates about one quadrillion dollars in total traditional and crypto cross-border payment market value in 2024; that figure concerns the broad cross-border payments market, not remittances alone. Its analysis also emphasizes that payment patterns vary by geography, currency, payment type and transaction size. Market-wide figures do not show whether crypto is practical or economical for an individual family’s transfer.
