To compare crypto prices across exchanges, read the full trading pair, keep its quote currency visible, and record the venue and time. AVAX/USD and AVAX/USDT are different markets: one quotes AVAX in USD, the other in USDT. Convert to a common reference currency only when you need a like-for-like comparison, and preserve the original pair beside the converted value.

What a crypto trading pair tells you

A pair names two assets. The first is the base asset; the second is the quote asset. In AVAX/USD, the quoted price expresses how much USD one AVAX costs. In AVAX/USDT, it expresses how much USDT one AVAX costs.

Those quote assets are not interchangeable just because an app places a dollar sign beside both prices or displays similar numbers. CoinGecko’s AVAX markets page lists both USD and USDT pairs, including USD listings on Coinbase Exchange and Kraken and USDT listings on Binance, Gate, OKX, and KuCoin. Listings and live values can change, so check the current pair label rather than relying on a remembered exchange list.

A ticker alone may also be ambiguous. Confirm the asset’s identity and the specific venue listing before comparing prices; do not assume that matching symbols always mean the same asset.

How to compare prices without mixing currencies

  1. Confirm the asset and full pair. Record the asset identity and pair exactly as shown, such as AVAX/USD, AVAX/USDT, or AVAX/EUR.
  2. Name the venue and market type. Record the exchange and whether the listing is spot, a derivative, or a decentralized-exchange market. These are not automatically comparable instruments.
  3. Keep the native quote currency. Store the venue’s displayed last price with its quote asset. Do not silently relabel a USDT or USDC quote as USD.
  4. Normalize when useful. To compare markets with different quote currencies, convert their prices to one stated reference currency using a named conversion source and observation time. Keep the native price and pair visible alongside the converted value.
  5. Align timestamps and assess trading conditions. Compare observations from roughly the same time. A last trade may be stale; when deciding where an order could execute, check the bid-ask spread, market depth, and volume where available.
  6. Distinguish a venue quote from an aggregate reference price. A provider-wide coin price may combine multiple markets and conversions. Treat it as a reference measure, not the exact price available on every exchange.

CoinGecko’s exchange-data API material illustrates why these fields should remain distinct: its example includes a native last price, converted values, spread, volume, and last-update information. A converted value is useful for comparison, but it does not replace the venue’s native quote.

What to put in a comparison table

For a clear comparison, give each listing its own row and include the fields that explain what the number represents:

  • Venue and market type: exchange name and spot, derivatives, or DEX designation.
  • Full pair and native last price: for example, AVAX/USDT and the price in USDT.
  • Normalized value: the reference-currency amount, plus the conversion source and time.
  • Observation time: when the price was observed or last updated.
  • Spread and execution context: bid-ask spread, market depth, and volume when available and relevant.

This makes it possible to distinguish a difference caused by quote currency or conversion from one related to timing or trading conditions.

How to choose a tool for ongoing monitoring

A multi-exchange market-data view or portfolio tracker can help if you want to monitor several listings. CoinGecko describes exchange metadata and ticker access and shows exchange comparison as a use case; its AVAX markets page is an example of pair-level listings. Its price aggregation methodology is relevant when you need to understand how an aggregate reference value is calculated; check the current document for the methodology in force.

Before relying on a tracker, check that it shows the original quote asset, venue identity, timestamps, and a clear basis for any converted value. A single converted number without those details can hide the very differences you are trying to compare.

A quick reading check

  • Does the label show the complete pair, not just “AVAX”?
  • Is the quote USD, USDT, USDC, EUR, or another asset?
  • Are the venue and market type identified?
  • Are the timestamps close enough for a useful comparison?
  • If values are converted, can you see the conversion basis and the native price?
  • If you are judging execution, are spread, depth, and volume available?
