The figure was an implied fully diluted valuation based on pre-market trading—not $40 billion raised, a count of tokens already sold, or the value of tokens freely circulating. WLFI began public spot trading on September 1, 2025.
What is WLFI, and what does it do?
WLFI is World Liberty Financial’s governance token. The project says holders can propose, review, and vote on governance, and it lists WLFI on Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Solana. These are the project’s descriptions of the token and its networks, not independent verification of how much influence token holders have in practice. World Liberty Financial
The project also describes WLFI Markets as a product for supplying assets or borrowing against collateral. It separately describes USD1 as a U.S. dollar stablecoin. USD1 and WLFI are not interchangeable: USD1 is the stablecoin, while WLFI is the governance token at the center of the valuation headline. World Liberty Financial
Where did the $40 billion figure come from?
On August 23, 2025, The Block reported that WLFI pre-market perpetual contracts traded at roughly $0.40 to $0.42. Multiplying those quoted prices by the project’s stated total supply of 100 billion tokens produced an implied fully diluted valuation above $40 billion. The Block, August 23, 2025

That calculation applies the price of a trade to every token in the total supply, including tokens that may be locked or not yet available to trade. It is not the same as circulating market capitalization, which uses tokens circulating in the market, and it does not measure money raised by the project. A quoted price multiplied by total supply is a valuation estimate—not evidence that buyers would pay that price for every token or that the full supply could be sold at it.
A separate transaction disclosed in an August 2025 SEC filing involved $750 million in WLFI tokens priced at $0.20 each. That transaction context is distinct from the pre-market valuation calculation; it does not mean the project raised $40 billion or establish a stable market price. ALT5 Sigma Corporation Form 8-K

What happened when WLFI began trading?
Token holders voted in July 2025 to permit trading, and WLFI began public spot trading on September 1, according to The Guardian. The Guardian reported that Binance, OKX, and Bybit offered the token at that time; those are historical listings, not confirmation of current availability. The Guardian, September 2, 2025
The Block reported a spot price above $0.30 at launch, implying a fully diluted value above $30 billion when multiplied by the 100 billion total supply. The Guardian reported that the price later fell from above $0.30 to $0.20 during the first trading day. These dated snapshots show why the earlier $40 billion figure should be understood as a pre-market estimate, not a lasting market value. The Block, September 1, 2025 The Guardian, September 2, 2025

ABC News reported that public disclosures attributed 22.5 billion WLFI tokens to certain Trump family members. At a reported price of about $0.23 on September 2, 2025, ABC estimated that position at roughly $5 billion. That was a price-dependent paper valuation, not cash received from selling the tokens. ABC also reported that team tokens were locked and could not be sold pending a vesting schedule. ABC News, September 2, 2025

The Guardian separately described an approximately $5 billion addition to the family’s paper-wealth estimate based on WLFI’s initial trading. It noted that Trump held an unspecified amount and reported company statements that Trump and other team members were barred from selling their tokens. Neither report establishes proceeds from a sale of the cited holdings. The Guardian, September 2, 2025
