Best Clothing Subscription Boxes: Try-and-Buy Styling vs. Rental

Compare four clothing services by whether you buy stylist-selected pieces or rent a rotating wardrobe, with current listed fees and key return rules.

The best clothing subscription depends on whether you want to buy clothes chosen for you or rent pieces for temporary variety. Stitch Fix and Wantable are try-and-buy styling services; Nuuly and Rent the Runway are rental subscriptions. Their fees pay for different things, so compare costs and return rules within those two groups rather than treating them as interchangeable.

The title’s 2025 date is historical: the prices and offers below reflect provider pages reviewed on October 4, 2026, not verified 2025 prices. Terms and promotions can change, so check each provider’s current page before signing up.

Start with the kind of service you want

Service model How it works Services covered here
Try-and-buy styling box A stylist-curated selection arrives for you to try. You purchase the pieces you keep and return the rest; a styling fee may be credited toward purchases. Stitch Fix and Wantable
Clothing rental You pay for temporary access to a rotating wardrobe. You return rented pieces under the plan’s rules rather than buying everything you wear. Nuuly and Rent the Runway

If your goal is to own a few useful additions, a styling box is the more direct match. If you want to rotate looks without buying each piece, consider a rental plan. Neither model’s headline fee tells the whole cost: account for kept clothes, taxes, add-ons, and any charges for loss or significant damage that the provider’s terms allow.

Best try-and-buy clothing subscription boxes

Stitch Fix: flexible styling without a required monthly subscription

Stitch Fix offers curated “Fixes” selected with input from algorithms and stylists. You can set a regular delivery cadence or order on demand, keep what you want, and return the rest. The company says it serves customers in the United States and offers women’s, men’s, and kids’ clothing, as well as petite, maternity, and plus apparel, shoes, and accessories. See how Stitch Fix works and its pricing.

Stitch Fix says there is no monthly fee or subscription requirement and charges a $20 styling fee per Fix. That fee is credited toward items you keep; shipping and returns are free. The fee is not the price of the clothes, so your total depends on what you buy.

Best fit: People who want stylist-curated suggestions but do not want to commit to a recurring subscription. The option to order on demand also suits occasional wardrobe refreshes.

Wantable: category-focused edits with a preview and try-on window

Wantable sends nine stylist-selected pieces in an “Edit,” with categories including Style, Active, Sleep & Body, and Men’s Active. You can state preferences and make requests; the company describes a preview or decline step and a five-day try-on period. Its $20 styling fee is credited toward purchases, and shipping and returns are free. Read the current Wantable service details before ordering.

Best fit: Shoppers who want an edit centered on a particular clothing category, such as activewear or sleepwear, and value some input before the shipment is finalized. Check that your preferred sizes and styles are represented in current offerings; availability and fit can vary.

Best clothing rental subscriptions

Nuuly: six rental items per month

Nuuly’s listed monthly plan costs $98 plus applicable tax for six chosen rental items. Cleaning, shipping, and returns are included, and subscribers can choose to buy items. The company also lists up to four bonus items at $22 each and says subscribers may pause or cancel. See Nuuly’s FAQ and how it works.

The how-it-works page advertises code TRYNUULY for $28 off the first month, displaying an initial price of $70 before applicable tax; the stated recurring price after that month is $98 monthly. This is a current offer, not a verified 2025 price, and promotions can expire or change.

Nuuly says it ships within the United States, but not to PO Boxes or APO/FPO addresses. Its next-month selection does not unlock just because a billing date has passed: the returned items must also be received and processed. The company says there are no late or damage fees, but return processing still affects when you can select the next month’s items.

Best fit: Someone who wants a fixed monthly rotation of several pieces and is comfortable returning the prior selection before moving on to the next one.

Rent the Runway: designer clothing and accessories on rental plans

Rent the Runway offers a rental subscription for clothing and accessories. Its Full Subscription Closet is described as having more than 750 designer brands and styles, with retail values up to $3,000. Its Limited Subscription Closet is a curated everyday assortment with item retail values up to $350; it excludes formalwear, selected designers, and Vault items. These are assortment descriptions, not guarantees that every item is available to every member. Check the current plan details for live options and restrictions.

Members can keep pieces while their subscription is active and return items on their own schedule rather than sending every piece back together. Rent the Runway says minor mishaps and ordinary wear are covered; significant damage, loss, or theft may result in a charge at the item’s current purchase price plus applicable tax.

Best fit: Renters looking for access to designer items or a broader assortment of clothing and accessories, provided the relevant items are available under their plan.

Compare the costs and rules that affect your real choice

Service What the listed fee covers Choice and timing Costs or restrictions to check
Stitch Fix $20 styling fee per Fix, credited toward kept items; no monthly subscription required. Clothing purchases are extra. Choose regular cadence or order on demand; try the Fix and return unwanted pieces. Price of each item you keep. Shipping and returns are listed as free. Provider pricing.
Wantable $20 styling fee per Edit, credited toward purchases. Clothing purchases are extra. Nine selected pieces; preferences and requests are available. Five days to try the Edit; preview or decline selections. Price of items kept and current size/style availability. Shipping and returns are listed as free. Provider details.
Nuuly $98 per month plus applicable tax for six rental items; optional bonus items cost $22 each. Choose items for the month. The next selection unlocks after the billing date and processing of returned items. Current first-month promotion, address eligibility, tax, and return-processing time. Provider details.
Rent the Runway Plan prices are not stated in the cited plan description. Choose from the available closet for your plan; members can keep pieces while active and return on their own schedule. Current plan price, inventory limits, exclusions, and charges for significant damage, loss, or theft. Provider plan details.

Do not compare a styling fee with a rental subscription fee as if they buy the same thing. For styling boxes, estimate what you would actually pay for the clothes you expect to keep. For rentals, compare the recurring charge and tax with how often you will use the pieces, plus any optional additions. A low entry price matters only if the service model and return schedule fit your routine.

Check fit, availability, and shipping before subscribing

  • Size and category: Review the provider’s current size range and available categories for the exact plan or edit you want. A service’s general category list does not establish that a particular size or garment is currently available.
  • Geography and address: Confirm the service ships to your location and can deliver to your address. Nuuly’s stated US service excludes PO Boxes and APO/FPO addresses.
  • Selection control: Decide whether you prefer a stylist’s selection, a chance to preview and request items, or browsing an available rental closet. More choice does not guarantee a particular item will be in stock.
  • Calendar and returns: Check the try-on period, billing date, return method, and processing time. With Nuuly, return processing is part of the next-month selection sequence.
  • Damage and loss terms: Read the provider’s current policy before renting, especially what counts as ordinary wear and what can trigger a charge.

Is renting clothes automatically more sustainable?

No broad conclusion follows from the evidence available here. A June 2026 Atlantic feature reported that a 2021 jeans life-cycle study found its modeled rental-service scenario had the highest emissions and climate-change potential among the scenarios compared. That is a finding about one garment and a set of modeled scenarios, not proof that every rental service or garment has a larger footprint than buying. Rental also does not necessarily mean a person buys or consumes fewer clothes.
