If your GST registration application was rejected for one state, open the rejection order—FORM GST REG-05—in the GST Portal to see the case-specific reason. Sign in using the application’s Temporary Reference Number (TRN), review the order, correct the relevant details, then submit a fresh application for the right state. If the reason is not visible, contact the jurisdictional officer through the portal rather than guessing.
1. Identify the rejected application
When an applicant has more than one GST registration or application linked to a PAN, first make sure you have selected the record for the state you need to fix. GSTN’s normal-taxpayer registration guide describes a PAN-level view of applications and registrations: red indicates a rejected application, green an approved one, and orange one pending processing or an order. Use the state and application details to distinguish the rejected record.
2. Find and read the rejection order
- Sign in to the GST Portal using the TRN associated with the application.
- Open Services > User Services > View Notices and Orders.
- Locate and open the rejection order, FORM GST REG-05. Save a copy and note its application reference details before preparing a new submission.
GSTN’s known-issues guidance identifies this route for viewing a rejection reason. The official forms reference identifies REG-05 as the order rejecting an application for registration, amendment, or cancellation. The order’s explanation—not a generic list of possible problems—should guide what you correct.
3. Distinguish a rejection from a request for clarification
Check the form number and the action requested before deciding what to do. A request for more information is not itself a rejection order.

| Form | Official purpose | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| REG-01 | Taxpayer application for registration | The application form used for a fresh registration application. |
| REG-03 | Tax-official request for additional information, clarification, or documents | Respond to the request; it is not by itself a rejection order. |
| REG-04 | Taxpayer submission of clarification, additional information, or documents | The response form associated with a REG-03 request. |
| REG-05 | Tax-official order rejecting an application for registration, amendment, or cancellation | Read the order for the reason in your specific case. |
These form purposes are listed in GSTN’s GST forms reference. Follow the notice and current portal instructions shown for your own application.
4. If you cannot see the reason
GSTN’s troubleshooting guidance says to contact the jurisdictional officer when the rejection reason cannot be viewed. Go to Services > User Services > Contact (the guide also describes the route as Dashboard > Services > User Services > Contact) and use the officer details shown for your jurisdiction. Ask what basis the rejection order states and what correction or supporting material is needed. Do not assume a reason that is absent from the order.

5. Correct the relevant details and apply again
Compare the rejected application with the order and your supporting records. Start with the fields explicitly included in GSTN’s registration workflow:
- State/UT and district: verify that the application identifies the state and district for which you need registration.
- Legal name: check that the legal name matches the name recorded in PAN.
Correct other particulars only where the order and your actual records call for it. GSTN’s known-issues guidance says an applicant can file another new application with the desired changes. Start the fresh application at Services > Registration > New Registration, selecting the correct state. The detailed fields and instructions are in GSTN’s normal-taxpayer registration guide.

6. Track the new application
After filing, use Services > Registration > Track Application Status to follow the application. GSTN’s guide says an Application Reference Number (ARN) receipt is sent to the registered email address and mobile number when filing is complete. Portal labels can change, so check the current screen if a menu name differs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to keep together
- A copy of the REG-05 order and the application reference details.
- The state-specific record you used to identify the rejected application.
- The corrected application details and supporting records relevant to the order.
- The new ARN receipt and status details after filing.
The official guidance establishes how to find the order, contact the officer if its reason is unavailable, and file a new application with desired changes. It does not provide a current exhaustive list of valid rejection grounds or a universal waiting period or deadline for reapplying. The specific order and your circumstances control. If the order raises a complex legal or tax issue, consider consulting a qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant.
