If your 5% rotating-category bonus is missing, check the activation status for the correct card and quarter, the purchase and processing dates, the transaction’s category coding, and any spending cap. The rules vary by issuer, so your card’s current account terms—not another bank’s calendar—determine whether a purchase qualifies.
Start with the card and quarter
Identify the issuer, card product, and quarter tied to the purchase. A 5% category offer may require activation each quarter, but deadlines and eligibility rules differ by program. Check the signed-in account for the card in question, rather than assuming activation on another card or a prior quarter carries over.
Check whether activation was recorded
Look for an activated status or confirmation in the issuer’s account or rewards section. Save any confirmation and note the date. Discover lists its mobile app, online account, and telephone (1-800-DISCOVER) as ways to activate; some Discover accounts may now need servicing through Capital One-branded channels. Follow the options shown for your account.
For Chase Freedom Flex, the current terms require activation by the quarter’s activation deadline. Chase’s agreement says, “You must activate your 5% Bonus Cash Back each quarter by the activation deadline.” If you missed a deadline, don’t assume the issuer will apply activation retroactively; ask the issuer whether your account’s terms allow it.

Compare activation and purchase dates with the offer window
Check the activation date, purchase date, date the charge posted or was processed, and quarter-end date. The date that matters can depend on the issuer’s terms. Chase says a qualifying charge must be submitted by the merchant by the last day of the relevant calendar quarter. Its agreement states: “For a purchase to qualify for the 5% Bonus Cash Back, the merchant must submit charges to your card by the last day of the relevant calendar quarter.” A purchase made before quarter-end may not meet that rule if it is submitted afterward.
Discover’s terms describe the qualifying window as starting on the activation date when activation takes place after the quarter begins. Check the specific offer in your signed-in account for its applicable dates; do not apply one issuer’s timing rule to another.

Make sure the transaction itself qualifies
- Confirm it was a purchase. Check the posted statement entry and make sure it is on the card that was activated. A return or reversal may also affect the reward.
- Check the category definition. A merchant that looks eligible to you may be classified differently for rewards. Chase explains that the merchant or payment processor assigns a merchant category code, and that an apparently eligible business may not receive the code associated with the bonus category.
- Consider how you paid. A digital wallet or third-party payment processor can route a transaction under a code that does not qualify. The business name alone does not guarantee bonus treatment.
Check the quarterly spending cap
A cap can explain why some purchases earn the bonus while later ones do not. Current Chase Freedom Flex terms provide 5% on up to $1,500 in combined quarterly bonus-category purchases in each quarter the cardmember activates; after that cap, the rate returns to 1%. Discover’s general program summary also describes a $1,500 quarterly category-purchase cap. These are program-specific terms, so verify the cap and how eligible spending is counted for your own card.
What to ask the issuer
If the account status, dates, coding, and cap do not explain the missing bonus, contact the issuer using the number on your card or statement. Have the card product, quarter, activation confirmation, transaction date and amount, merchant name, and statement entry ready. Ask the representative to check:

- Whether activation was recorded for the correct card and quarter, and what effective date applies.
- Whether the transaction posted, was submitted within the eligible period, and received a qualifying category code.
- Whether a cap, exclusion, return, or reversal affected the reward.
- When an eligible reward should appear, based on your account’s terms.
Keep the question neutral until the issuer reviews the account. A public category list cannot establish your private activation status or determine how your particular transaction was coded.

Chase Freedom Flex
Chase’s terms describe quarterly activation, a $1,500 combined category-purchase cap, and a requirement that the merchant submit a qualifying charge by quarter-end. Its 2026 calendar listed gas stations, public transit, EV charging, select live entertainment, and United Way for Q3. The calendar showed Q4 as “Coming Soon” when checked October 3, 2026. These categories and dates apply to that product’s calendar, not to other cards; check Chase’s current Freedom Flex calendar and your account for the relevant quarter.

Discover
Discover’s 5% cash back program page describes activation through the app, online account, or phone and gives general program guidance. Its displayed category examples may be out of date, so use the current offer shown after signing in rather than relying on a public example to determine a quarter’s categories or dates.
