Can You Reverse an Airline Points Transfer? What Happens If You Change Your Mind

Airline points transfers are usually final, but canceling an award ticket may return miles to the airline account under separate rules. Here’s what to check if you change your mind.

Usually, no. Once bank or credit-card rewards have been converted into airline miles, the transfer is commonly final. The rules of both the rewards program you transferred from and the airline program you transferred to apply. Canceling an award ticket is a separate matter: it may return miles to your airline account, but that does not normally convert them back into your bank’s rewards currency.

Why a completed transfer usually cannot be undone

A points transfer and an award-ticket cancellation are two different transactions. A transfer moves rewards into an airline loyalty program; a cancellation concerns a ticket bought with miles already in that program. Even if a canceled ticket qualifies for a mileage redeposit, the miles generally stay with the airline program.

Program terms illustrate how firm transfer rules can be. RBC Avion Rewards’ terms dated March 27, 2026, say, “A conversion of Points is final and may not be reversed.” They also state that converted rewards are governed by the partner program’s terms and that a conversion may take up to four weeks to appear. TAP Miles&Go likewise describes transfers from non-airline partner loyalty programs as irreversible. These are examples, not a universal rule for every bank and airline pairing: check the terms that apply to your specific transfer. TAP Miles&Go Programme Terms and Conditions

What to do if you transferred points by mistake

  1. Check the transfer status. Look in the source rewards account and the airline account to see whether the transfer is pending, completed, or not yet visible. Processing time can vary; RBC Avion says a partner conversion may take up to four weeks to appear.
  2. Contact both programs promptly. Give the source provider and airline the transfer date, amount, account details, and transaction reference. Ask whether the transfer can be stopped or whether any case-specific remedy is available.
  3. Do not assume an exception applies. The terms cited here do not establish a general accidental-transfer exception or guarantee a remedy for points sent to the wrong account or affected by a processing error. Only the programs involved can confirm what they will do.
  4. Hold off on spending the miles while you clarify your options. If the transfer is already complete, using the miles may further limit the options available to either program.

If you cancel an award flight, do the points go back to your credit card?

Usually, no. If the airline allows a cancellation and mileage redeposit, the miles are returned under that airline program’s rules; that is not the same as reversing the original bank-to-airline conversion. Fees, eligibility, expiration, and deadlines depend on the ticket and program.

What to check before asking for a cancellation or redeposit

  • The exact source rewards program and airline loyalty program, since both sets of terms may matter.
  • Whether the miles are still in the airline account or have already been used to book travel.
  • Whether the award itinerary is completely unused or partly flown.
  • The ticket’s origin, fare conditions, cancellation deadline, and any fee.
  • Whether redeposited miles retain their original expiration date.
