Find the flight award and confirm its current mileage price before transferring any credit card points. Transfers are often final, may take several days, and can leave you with airline miles you cannot use for the trip you wanted. Check the exact transfer terms and recipient details in your rewards account, send only the amount you need, and book through the airline after the miles arrive.
1. Find and verify the award before you transfer
Search the airline loyalty program for the exact route, travel date, cabin, and number of passengers. Confirm that the itinerary can actually be booked with miles, how many miles it costs, and the taxes, fees, and booking conditions. American Express advises checking award availability and the points required before transferring because transfers are final (American Express Membership Rewards transfer guidance). Chase likewise recommends checking with the partner to see how many miles are needed (Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer guide).
A search result is not necessarily a reservation. Award seats and mileage prices can change, so do not assume the itinerary is held unless the airline explicitly confirms a hold and its rules.
2. Confirm the transfer route for your specific rewards account
Sign in to the card issuer’s rewards portal and check that the airline program is listed as a current transfer partner for your particular account. Partner lists, eligibility, ratios, bonuses, minimums, and fees can vary by issuer, account, and date. Do not rely on an old chart or assume that a partner available to another cardholder is available to you. Chase’s guide describes eligible cards and participating partners; American Express displays partner-specific transfer information in its interface (Chase guide; American Express transfer page).

3. Match the recipient account details
Access or create your airline loyalty account and record its membership number. Before linking accounts or submitting a request, compare the recipient’s name and details with the information on file with the issuer. Chase warns that the names need to match and that even small variations can cause a transfer to fail (Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer guide). Its program agreement also requires transfer details to match the partner’s records (Chase program agreement).
Do not assume you can transfer to any traveler or household member. For example, American Express’s U.S. Membership Rewards guidance says the partner account must be linked and belong to the cardmember or an eligible Additional Card Member (American Express Membership Rewards guidance). Recipient rules differ by issuer, country, and program; follow the terms shown for your account.

4. Review the confirmation screen carefully
Before authorizing the transfer, check the details that will determine what you give up and what the airline receives:
- The transfer ratio and any currently offered bonus.
- The number of points, minimum transfer, and permitted increments.
- The airline membership number and recipient name.
- Any fee and the stated processing estimate.
- Whether the transfer is final or can be canceled.
As of its current online guide accessed in 2026, Chase says transfers are made in 1,000-point increments and are final (Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer guide). Chase’s agreement says a fee may apply and should be disclosed before you complete a transfer (Chase program agreement). These are Chase-specific terms, not universal rules: rely on the live confirmation screen and the terms for your issuer and account.

5. Transfer only the points needed
Once the award and transfer details check out, move the amount needed for that booking. Avoid sending a speculative surplus: if the award disappears or your plans change, points already converted may remain in the airline program. A small cushion is reasonable only when the program’s pricing or transfer rules justify it. Save the transfer confirmation or reference number.
This is risk-management guidance, not a guarantee that a smaller transfer will process faster or be safer. Chase describes its transfers as nonrefundable and noncancelable, while American Express also says transfers are final (Chase program agreement; American Express Membership Rewards guidance).

6. Allow for the stated processing time
Processing time depends on the issuer and airline partner. Chase says most requests process by the next business day, but a transfer may take up to seven business days (Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer guide; Chase program agreement). American Express provides estimates for individual partners through its transfer interface (American Express transfer page).
Do not assume your transfer will be instant. If the award is time-sensitive, check whether the airline offers a hold and confirm the exact terms before relying on one; there is no universal hold policy.

7. Verify the miles arrived, then book with the airline
After the transfer, check the airline account to confirm that the miles posted. American Express instructs members to verify the partner account and redeem directly with the airline or hotel (American Express Membership Rewards guidance). Once the miles appear, search again, confirm the itinerary and final price, and complete the booking under the airline’s current conditions. After conversion, the airline loyalty program’s terms govern the miles (Chase program agreement).
What to do if the transfer is pending or the balance is wrong
- Keep the confirmation or reference number and note when you submitted the transfer.
- Check the issuer’s stated processing estimate and the airline account for an updated balance.
- If the transfer remains pending or the posted balance is incorrect, contact the issuer and the airline with the confirmation details.
Which party can resolve a problem, and what remedy is available, depends on the applicable terms. Do not count on customer service being able to reverse an authorized transfer.
