The cut, brand-specific size chart, garment measurements, fabric, and the amount of room you prefer matter more than the label. Compare the exact top and pants you plan to buy rather than assuming the same letter size will fit across cuts.
What is the difference between women’s and unisex scrubs?
Women’s and unisex describe garment cuts and sizing systems, not a guaranteed fit. Women’s lines may use a more shaped silhouette; unisex lines use a shared fit category, and some brands describe particular styles as roomier. Construction varies by manufacturer and product, so a category name alone cannot tell you how a garment will fit.
For example, Dickies publishes separate women’s and unisex measurement charts: its women’s chart uses bust, waist, and hip, while its unisex chart uses chest, waist, and hip. The brand also maps the two charts to separate size labels. See Dickies’ size chart and avoid treating a letter size or street-size range as a direct conversion between cuts. The chart is on Dickies’ Canadian site, so check the chart for your market and exact style.
How do the fit, sizing, and comfort compare?
| Factor | Women’s scrubs | Unisex scrubs | What to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pattern and silhouette | May offer a more shaped fit; construction differs by brand and style. | Uses a shared fit category; some styles are explicitly described as roomy. | Read the product description and check garment measurements rather than relying on the category name. Dickies; SmartScrubs |
| Size chart | May chart bust, waist, and hip. | May chart chest, waist, and hip. | Use the exact style’s chart; don’t assume matching labels mean matching dimensions. Dickies |
| Ease and comfort | Can suit someone who prefers a more shaped fit, if measurements allow adequate room. | A roomy style may suit someone who prefers more ease or a less shaped silhouette. | Consider how much room you want for movement. Brand fit guidance is not a head-to-head comfort test. SmartScrubs |
| Length | Varies by brand and style. | Varies by brand and style; Dickies lists regular, petite, and tall inseams for unisex pants. | Check the specific pant inseam and top length, especially if you need petite or tall sizing. Dickies |
| Fabric and features | Vary by model. | Vary by model. The Landau 71221 unisex top is listed as 65/35 poly/cotton by SanMar; publication year is not stated. | Compare the exact garment’s fabric, stated stretch, pockets, and other details; don’t infer them from the fit category. The available manufacturer and retailer guides provide sizing and fit advice, not controlled comparisons of comfort, mobility, or all-day wear. Comfort therefore depends on the wearer and the specific garment; there is no evidence here that one cut is categorically more comfortable.

Should I buy women’s or unisex scrubs?
Choose based on the silhouette and ease you want, then confirm the actual measurements. A women’s cut may be a useful starting point if you prefer a more shaped fit; a roomier unisex style may be a better starting point if you want more space or a less shaped silhouette. Those are preferences to test against the item’s chart, not rules that apply to every brand.

How do I choose the right scrub size?
- Take the measurements the chart requests. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for measuring your body.
- Open the chart for the specific garment and cut. Sizing can vary by brand, fabric, and cut, as retailer guides also note. Compare the exact product’s chart rather than relying on a general conversion. See Uniform Advantage’s size-chart guidance and Scrubs & Beyond’s size-chart guidance.
- Compare the measurements the chart uses. Check chest or bust, waist, and hip. If the chart’s measurements point to different sizes, follow that brand’s instructions. For example, Dickies advises choosing by hip when waist and hip indicate different sizes; that is Dickies-specific guidance, not a universal sizing rule. Dickies size chart
- Choose your preferred ease. If you fall between sizes, Dickies advises choosing smaller for a tighter fit or larger for a looser fit. SmartScrubs likewise frames its S.C.R.U.B.S. line as roomy and advises women to choose according to whether they prefer room to move or a more precise fit. These recommendations apply to those brands’ guidance, not every scrub line. Dickies; SmartScrubs
- Check length and how the pieces are sold. Confirm the inseam and top length. If the product is a set, check whether you can select separate sizes and whether the seller gives instructions for sizing the set based on the closer-fitting piece.
- Check the return or exchange terms before customizing. If possible, try the garment on before removing tags or adding embroidery.
What should I check before ordering?
- Exact product: Make sure the chart and fit notes match the style and cut in your cart.
- Measurements: Compare your body measurements to the chart; don’t use the same letter size from another cut as a conversion.
- Movement and ease: Decide whether you want a closer or looser fit for the tasks you do during a shift.
- Length: Verify the top length and pant inseam, including whether petite or tall options are offered for that product.
- Fabric and construction: Read the listed composition and any stated stretch or pocket details for the specific garment.
- Purchase terms: Confirm whether the top and pants are sold separately or as a set, and review return or exchange terms before embroidery or other customization.
