The best adult party favors are the ones that fit the occasion and feel useful or enjoyable to the people taking them home—not necessarily the most elaborate or expensive. Consider packaged treats, practical small gifts, plants, or personalized keepsakes, and choose a favor only if it suits your guests and your plans.
How to choose an adult party favor
There is no universal best favor: the ideas here are options, not a tested ranking or proof that every guest will want the same thing. Compare each idea against the event, how easy it is to carry home, whether guests are likely to use or enjoy it, and the effort required to personalize it.
- Match the occasion: A themed birthday or Halloween gathering may call for different favors than a shower or casual get-together.
- Think about the guest: Pick something guests can enjoy, use, or take home without hassle.
- Choose edible or reusable: Treats can be easy to share; non-food items may be more practical or serve as keepsakes.
- Keep the scale appropriate: A favor is optional hospitality, not an obligation to give a costly gift.
As JoJo Mrgich writes in Avery’s guide, “Guests are never too old for party favors, as long as you evolve your ideas of what to give to match the occasion.” The guide was published May 23, 2023 and updated July 28, 2026: Avery’s adult party favor ideas.
Edible favors guests can enjoy
Packaged food and drink samples are straightforward options when they suit the people attending. Examples from Avery and Costco’s current inspiration page include:
#1 Best Overall
- Gourmet or individually wrapped chocolate
- Mints, snack packs, or gourmet popcorn
- Coffee beans or coffee samples, and tea samples
- Olive oil or mini beverage bottles
Check guests’ preferences and the specific product’s packaging and ingredients before choosing food. The cited pages do not establish the allergen suitability of any named item. Costco’s page reflects current retailer guidance and a changing assortment, not a guarantee that a product was available in 2023: Costco party favor ideas.
Practical favors and small keepsakes
Non-edible options can work well when they reflect the theme or have a clear use after the party. Avery and Costco suggest:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Useful small goods: Bottle openers, playing cards, beverage koozies, lip balm, and candles
- Plants: Small succulents or herbs
- Reusable items: Tote bags, travel mugs, glassware, or pouches
- Occasion-themed gifts: Cocktail kits or small comfort and self-care items
Consider portability as well as usefulness: a guest should be able to carry the item home, and fragile glassware may need more careful packaging than a pouch or small card game. Personalization can make a simple object feel connected to the occasion, but it takes extra preparation.
How to assemble DIY favor bags
Avery’s process is simple: decide what goes inside, choose a container, personalize it, then assemble the favors. A reusable tote or fabric pouch can double as both the container and the favor.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose the contents. Select one item or a small combination that fits the occasion and your guests.
- Pick a container. Options include gift bags or boxes, poly bags, plain paper bags, Mason jars, and ornament boxes.
- Add a personal detail. Use a label, tag, or fabric transfer to tie the favor to the event.
- Assemble and place them. Costco suggests a decorative basket, a favor table, each guest’s place setting, or handing favors out as guests leave.
Party favors are not host gifts
A party favor is a take-home item from the host to a guest. A host gift goes in the other direction: it is a guest’s thank-you to the host. Emily Post says adult birthday parties typically do not require gifts for the honoree, though cards are appreciated; its host-gift guidance describes a small gift suited to the occasion and within the giver’s means. Neither custom makes party favors mandatory: Emily Post’s party gift etiquette.
