To buy Zcash (ZEC), use an exchange that serves your country, then withdraw your coins to a wallet you control. Before buying, check that the exchange can withdraw to the address type your wallet accepts—especially if you want shielded transactions. Secure the wallet’s recovery information before moving funds: losing the keys without a usable backup can mean losing access permanently.
Choose an exchange that works where you live
There is no universally best ZEC exchange for every buyer. Availability, payment methods, identity checks, fees, and withdrawal options vary by country and provider. Zcash’s guidance identifies location as a factor in choosing an exchange and recommends one that supports shielded withdrawals when the aim is to fund a wallet for shielded use. Zcash: What’s the best Zcash exchange?
Before opening an account or sending money, confirm the provider’s current terms for your location. Check the total purchase cost, any deposit or trading fees, withdrawal fees, account requirements, and whether ZEC withdrawals are enabled. Do not assume that an exchange supports withdrawals to shielded addresses simply because it lists ZEC.
Pick a wallet and match its address support
A wallet determines which kinds of ZEC transactions you can make and how you recover access. Wallets may support transparent addresses only, support transparent and shielded transactions, or shield funds by default. Some wallets support unified addresses, which can combine multiple address types; whether funds are automatically shielded depends on the wallet’s implementation. #1 Best Overall
Before withdrawing, compare the exchange’s available withdrawal format with the receiving wallet’s supported address. A mismatch can prevent a transfer or keep you from using ZEC as intended. If shielded use matters to you, confirm that the wallet supports the relevant shielded workflow and that the exchange can send to it.
Understand what Zcash transactions reveal
Zcash supports transparent and shielded activity, but owning a shielded-capable wallet does not make every transaction private. When a transaction involves a transparent address as sender or recipient, the transparent address and amount are publicly visible on the blockchain. A shielded-to-shielded transaction encrypts the sender, receiver, amount, and memo from public view while still allowing the network to verify the transaction. Transaction fees remain visible. For shielded use, check every step in the route: the exchange withdrawal, the destination address, and the wallet’s behavior when receiving and spending funds. A transparent-address step can expose details even when the wallet also supports shielded transactions.
Withdraw carefully and verify receipt
- Set up the receiving wallet. Follow the wallet’s official setup and recovery instructions. Confirm which address type it accepts for the transaction you plan to make.
- Check the exchange withdrawal details. Confirm ZEC withdrawals are available and that the withdrawal format is compatible with the wallet’s destination address.
- Send a small test amount if appropriate. Follow the exchange and wallet instructions, then verify that the funds arrived and can be used as intended before transferring a larger balance.
- Withdraw the remaining amount only after verification. Review the destination address and transaction details before confirming. A mistaken or incompatible transfer may be difficult or impossible to recover.
While ZEC remains in an exchange account, the provider controls the wallet keys; withdrawing to a wallet you control shifts responsibility for access and recovery to you.

Protect the wallet’s recovery information
A private key authorizes spending. If you lose access to the key and have no working backup, you may permanently lose access to the funds. Zcash documentation explains that a master seed can back up Sapling addresses, but recovery procedures vary by wallet. Follow the specific wallet’s instructions and make sure you understand what its backup restores. Zcash Documentation: Addresses and Value Pools in Zcash The SEC’s 2025 Form 10-K also describes the permanent-access-loss risk associated with losing keys without a backup. - Keep the recovery seed or key private and protected from both theft and accidental loss.
- Never share it with anyone, or enter it into a website or support chat in response to a request for help.
- Use the wallet’s recovery instructions rather than relying on an unverified backup product or generic directions.
Consider hardware wallets only after checking the full workflow
Hardware, mobile, and desktop wallets are all categories in the Zcash ecosystem. Zcash’s ecosystem directory lists Keystone, but a directory listing does not establish that a particular model supports every shielded workflow. Zcash: Discover the Zcash Ecosystem

Before choosing a hardware device, verify the exact model’s compatibility, any required companion wallet, its signing and recovery process, and whether the complete setup supports the address type you intend to use. Hardware storage is an option for keeping signing keys offline; it is not, by itself, a guarantee of transaction privacy.
