What Jewelry Was Stolen from the Louvre? The Eight Missing Pieces

Eight pieces of jewelry were stolen from the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon on October 19, 2025. The list includes emerald jewelry, a sapphire parure, a reliquary brooch and pieces associated with Empress Eugénie. Eugénie’s crown was also taken during the incident, but it was recovered at the scene and is not one of the eight missing objects. The Louvre estimated the loss at €88 million.

What jewelry was stolen from the Louvre?

The Louvre’s October 19, 2025, statement says thieves targeted two high-security display cases in the Galerie d’Apollon and took eight objects. The museum’s list names seven entries, some of which are groups of jewelry; the Associated Press, citing the French Culture Ministry, identifies Eugénie’s brooch as the eighth object.

  • Sapphire parure associated with Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense: a diadem, a necklace and a single earring.
  • Marie-Louise’s emerald parure: a necklace and a pair of earrings.
  • The Reliquary Brooch.
  • Empress Eugénie’s diadem or tiara.
  • Empress Eugénie’s brooch.

The inventory reflects the wording and attribution in the Louvre’s statement and the AP report; the pieces are historic objects, not simply interchangeable examples of modern jewelry. The Louvre’s list is available in its October 19 statement; AP’s inventory is reported here.

Which Louvre jewel was recovered?

Empress Eugénie’s crown was taken during the break-in but left behind and recovered at the scene. It is separate from her stolen diadem and brooch. Accordingly, the crown should not be counted among the eight objects reported missing. The Louvre said the crown’s condition was being examined; INTERPOL separately described eight other items as missing and entered in its Stolen Works of Art database.

How much were the stolen Louvre jewels worth?

The Louvre estimated the loss at €88 million in an October 21, 2025 follow-up. This is the museum’s monetary estimate of the loss, not a complete measure of the jewels’ historical or heritage significance; the Louvre describes that heritage value as inestimable. The figure should not be read as an exact current market price. The museum’s estimate and its distinction between financial and heritage value appear in its follow-up information.

In 2026, Le Monde described the eight stolen pieces as containing more than 8,700 precious stones and reported the €88 million estimate, while noting the separate heritage value. That stone count and characterization are the newspaper’s reporting, not a replacement for the Louvre’s loss estimate. See Le Monde’s report.

Are the stolen jewels still missing?

The latest dated status in the available reporting is Le Monde’s September 10, 2026 report: eleven months after the theft, the crown jewels remained missing. That is a dated update, not a guarantee that no later development has occurred. Earlier, the Apollo Gallery reopened to visitors in July 2026 without the jewels on display; the Associated Press reported then that the stolen objects had not been recovered.

What is known about the investigation?

The Louvre said alarms sounded and that an investigation was opened under the authority of the Paris prosecutor. The museum also stated that it would not comment publicly on the judicial investigation beyond information it had released.

In July 2026, Le Monde reported that two main suspects had been arrested about a week after the theft, charged and later questioned by investigating judges. The same report distinguished statements it described as corroborated from others it characterized as disjointed or outlandish. Those are reported accounts and characterizations, not established facts about the suspects’ claims or the whereabouts of the jewels. See Le Monde’s account.
