You can pay by UPI with an eligible RuPay credit card linked to a participating UPI app, but the supported use is for merchant payments—not sending money to another person. The practical options are variations on two flows: scanning a merchant’s QR code or choosing UPI at an online merchant’s checkout. The six contexts below explain those variations without implying six separate payment systems.
First, check whether your card can be linked
NPCI’s credit-card-on-UPI feature is for RuPay credit cards. A card must be supported by its issuing bank, and the UPI app must support linking that issuer’s cards. During card discovery, the app uses the mobile number registered with the bank. Check NPCI’s participating issuer and app information and your issuer’s current terms; a bank or app’s participation does not guarantee that every card will work in every app.
Visa, Mastercard and other non-RuPay credit cards are not covered by this documented RuPay-on-UPI flow. Linking a card also does not turn UPI into a general-purpose way to transfer credit-card funds to individuals.
Link your RuPay credit card to a UPI app
- Open a UPI app that supports RuPay credit cards and choose its option to add or link a credit card.
- Select the issuing bank. If the eligible card is not discovered, confirm that the app’s registered mobile number matches the number held by the card issuer.
- Select and confirm the card shown by the app, then set a UPI PIN for credit-card transactions as prompted.
NPCI recommends keeping the issuer-registered mobile number current and using a UPI PIN for credit-card UPI transactions that is different from the one used for a savings account or from the card’s own PIN. Check your available credit and outstanding balance with the issuer. Never share your UPI PIN or OTP. NPCI’s product guidance says, “Payment authentication will be done using UPI PIN.” See NPCI’s setup and safety guidance.

Six merchant-payment contexts
These are useful ways to encounter the feature, not six independent payment rails. A merchant must accept UPI, the transaction must be an allowed category, and both the card issuer and app must support the card-linked payment.
1. Scan a physical shop’s static QR
At a shop displaying a static merchant QR, scan it in the UPI app. Check the merchant name, enter the amount if requested, choose the linked RuPay credit card as the payment account, and authorize with the UPI PIN.

2. Scan a physical merchant’s dynamic QR
A dynamic QR can carry transaction details such as the amount. Scan it, verify the merchant and displayed amount, select the RuPay credit card, and authenticate. The QR type changes how payment details are presented; it does not create a separate card network or bypass issuer controls.
3. Pay on a website with UPI checkout
If a website offers UPI, select it at checkout and follow the available app hand-off or authorization flow. In the UPI app, select the linked RuPay card, verify the payment details, and confirm with the UPI PIN. The exact checkout experience depends on the merchant and app. An issuer example of the online flow is described in SBI Card’s RuPay-on-UPI announcement.

4. Pay in a merchant app that hands off to UPI
An e-commerce app may offer UPI and open a UPI app to complete payment. Choose the linked RuPay card in that app and authorize the merchant payment. This is an app-based version of online UPI checkout, and availability depends on the merchant’s integration and the UPI app.
5. Use a merchant QR in a different supported UPI app
If you have more than one UPI app, a merchant QR may be usable in an app that supports your issuer’s RuPay cards. Link the card in that app first, then scan and pay as you would for a physical merchant. Do not assume that a card linked in one app will automatically appear in another; confirm card discovery and support within the app you intend to use.

6. Apply reward points at checkout, if offered
Some eligible issuer programs may offer Pay by Points through a participating UPI app. NPCI says the app can show available points; if the balance covers the transaction, points may cover all of it, and otherwise the payment may be split between points and the credit account. This is an issuer-dependent feature, not a universal sixth way to pay. Check the Pay by Points FAQs and your card’s reward terms.

NPCI lists restrictions on using the feature for person-to-person transfers and several other categories. These include digital account opening, lending platforms, cash withdrawal at a merchant or ATM, card-to-card payments, e-RUPI, IPO, foreign inward remittances, mutual funds, and categories restricted by the issuer or RBI. If a payment is declined, check that it is a permitted merchant transaction rather than trying to route it as a person-to-person payment. Refer to NPCI’s current feature guidance and your issuer’s rules.

Limits, fees and rewards depend on the issuer
For linked RuPay credit-card UPI transactions, NPCI’s circular dated 16 November 2023 sets the applicable limit as the lowest of three controls: the issuer’s card limit, the issuer’s UPI risk limit, and the customer-set limit. Your usable amount may therefore be lower than your overall card credit limit. Ask the issuer or check its app for the limit that applies to your card. The circular is available at NPCI’s linked RuPay card transaction-limit notice.
NPCI’s general UPI FAQs describe standard UPI limits and merchant integration modes, but those general figures should not be treated as a guaranteed allowance for every credit-card-on-UPI transaction. Issuer-specific fees, reward eligibility, and the treatment of particular merchant categories are likewise determined by the card’s current terms; check those terms before relying on points or assuming a payment is free.
