The practical route is to choose the kind of planning you want to offer, learn the work, gain experience in your market and verify the business rules where you operate. Credentials are issued by specific organizations, so compare their requirements rather than assuming one is required everywhere.
1. Decide what kind of wedding planning you want to do
Wedding planners do not all sell the same service. Decide whether your goal is full-service planning, event-day coordination or another defined offering. That choice affects what you need to learn, the kinds of events to seek out and how you describe your services to prospective clients.
Also identify the market where you intend to work. Local venues, vendors, client expectations and business rules vary, and a credential or network that is relevant in one country may not carry the same weight elsewhere.
2. Learn the work and compare training routes
Training options include programs from associations and wedding-industry organizations. The organizations below describe their own offerings; their pages do not establish comparative course quality, graduate outcomes or universal industry recognition. Check current details directly before enrolling.

| AACWP | The American Association of Certified Wedding Planners describes training, designations and continuing education on its homepage and certification page. | Which training and experience criteria apply to the designation you want; membership, fees, mentorship and renewal terms. |
| WIPA/TISOH CWIP | WIPA’s February 22, 2022 announcement describes an online course and exam covering planning, business, wedding elements and client management. The announcement is from 2022, so reconfirm details. |
| WPIC | The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada FAQ describes classroom instruction and an online, self-paced route, with coursework and assessments or a final exam. | Current formats, location eligibility, student support, assessment, fees and credential terms. |
| WPAA | The Wedding Planning Association of Australia describes training, accreditation, business support, networking and an industry directory on its homepage and About page. | Current course and accreditation criteria, and whether its network is useful in the Australian market where you plan to work. |
Compare programs on practical factors, not the word “certified” alone:
- What the syllabus covers, including budgets, timelines, client communication and event-day coordination.
- Whether you complete practical assignments or observed event work, and how your skills are assessed.
- Whether instructors or mentors are accessible and what support students receive.
- The total current cost, including membership, application or renewal charges where applicable.
- Who issues the credential, what experience it requires and whether it must be renewed.
3. Build experience and document real event work
Seek supervised opportunities with established planners, venues or event teams. Assisting with a real wedding can teach you how plans meet the constraints of a live event: timing, vendor coordination, client communication and adapting when something changes.

Keep a record of work you actually did, and get permission before using client or event materials in a portfolio. Useful examples can include budgets, timelines, vendor-meeting records and descriptions of your responsibilities. AACWP’s published eligibility criteria illustrate that a credential application may ask for recent full-service wedding experience and supporting planning materials; those are AACWP-specific requirements, not a rule for entering the profession.
4. Understand credential requirements before applying
Credentials are program-specific signals, not established universal legal requirements. Read the issuer’s current criteria closely and describe any credential accurately by naming the organization that granted it.

AACWP criteria are tied to its own designations
AACWP’s undated eligibility page, accessed in 2026, lists three recent full-service weddings within the previous 18 months and supporting records for a stated Certified Wedding Planner route. It also describes a separate route for experienced planners, subject to other criteria. Its certification page says maintaining its titles includes membership and four annual credit hours of industry training. Confirm current requirements with AACWP; neither figure is an industry-wide standard.
WIPA/TISOH describes a course-and-exam credential
WIPA’s 2022 announcement presents CWIP as covering four competency areas: planning, business, wedding elements and client management. It says the program includes online training and an exam. WIPA characterizes the value of certification this way: “For the individual wedding professional, a certification signifies that they have the knowledge and skills to perform the job competently.” That is WIPA’s description of its view of certification, not an independent assessment of every credential.

Other organizations set their own terms
WPIC and WPAA describe distinct training and accreditation offerings on their respective pages. Check the current requirements and relevance to your intended market directly with each provider; the available descriptions do not establish that one credential is mandatory or universally recognized.

Planning skill is only part of serving clients. Build reliable methods for tracking budgets, creating timelines, communicating decisions, coordinating vendors and preparing contingencies. Agree in writing on what your service includes, when payments are due, how changes are handled and what happens if plans shift.

Before accepting clients, check the business-registration, tax, insurance and licensing rules that apply where you operate. Requirements depend on location, and the sources here do not establish rules for any particular jurisdiction. AACWP includes evidence of liability insurance and business or client-work documentation in specified application criteria; those requirements apply to its process, not automatically to every planner.
