You can usually close a U.S. Chase IHG credit card without closing your IHG One Rewards account. IHG points already posted to your membership remain subject to IHG’s rules; Chase says eligible card rewards not yet transferred are automatically sent to IHG after ordinary account closure. Before calling, check for pending rewards, confirm your posted balance, and keep your IHG membership active.
First, separate the card from your IHG account
Closing a Chase credit card and closing an IHG One Rewards membership are different actions. The Chase rewards agreement governs card rewards and their transfer; IHG’s membership terms govern points held in your loyalty account. Canceling the card does not, by itself, close the IHG membership.
Do not ask IHG to close your membership if your goal is only to cancel the card. IHG says membership closure is effective immediately and forfeits points, point vouchers, Reward Nights, and other account benefits. To close an IHG membership, IHG instructs members to contact Customer Care. Read IHG’s Member Terms & Conditions.
Check posted and pending points before you cancel
Points already transferred to IHG are governed by IHG’s terms. Card rewards may still be awaiting transfer: Chase says points are earned at the end of a billing cycle and transferred after the cycle ends. Under the ordinary closure process, Chase says eligible earned points are automatically transferred to IHG, but the agreement lists exceptions where untransferred points can be forfeited, including certain closures related to misuse, fraud, failure to comply with Chase agreements, or an inability to pay.

- Sign in to Chase and review the rewards display and latest statement for points earned but not yet transferred. Ask Chase to confirm the pending amount and expected transfer date.
- Sign in to IHG One Rewards and confirm that posted points appear under the correct membership number. Keep the account and its login open after closing the card.
- Save a record of the displayed balances and any confirmation Chase provides. If a transfer does not appear as expected, contact Chase about the card rewards and IHG about the loyalty-account posting.
These are the terms in Chase’s IHG One Rewards Classic Card Rewards Program Agreement, marked 01/06/2026. A legacy, business, non-U.S., or differently named card may have different terms; check the agreement for your exact product.
Understand when IHG points can expire
Canceling the card does not instantly erase points already posted to IHG, but the points remain subject to the loyalty program’s expiration rules. IHG’s current terms state that Club-level points expire after 12 consecutive months without an earn or redeem transaction. The Chase agreement also warns that inactivity expiry may depend on status, so do not assume every member has the same schedule. Check the current terms and the information in your account. After closing the card, keep the IHG account active and make a qualifying earn or redemption within the applicable inactivity window. Confirm that the activity has posted to your account rather than relying on a transaction that is still pending.
Review benefits, bookings, and fees before authorizing closure
Closing the card can end card-linked benefits, and their treatment depends on the specific product and benefit terms. Chase’s current U.S. IHG card page says cardmembers automatically earn Silver Elite status and lists other card features; that does not establish that every card version has the same perks or that a particular benefit continues after closure. Check Chase’s current IHG card information, then verify the terms for your own account.

- Check whether you rely on card-linked status, free-night certificates, statement credits, travel protections, or other perks.
- Review upcoming stays, purchases, or reservations that may depend on the card or a certificate.
- Ask Chase when each applicable benefit ends, whether a fee credit or refund applies to your account, and whether a product change is available.
The public general terms do not establish universal fee-refund eligibility, product-change availability, or the precise end date of every benefit. Treat each as an account-specific question for Chase, not a guaranteed outcome.

- Identify the exact card. Confirm its product name, issuer, and applicable rewards agreement. The cited agreement and Chase product information concern U.S. Chase IHG cards.
- Check rewards and benefits. Review pending card points, the IHG balance, certificates, credits, protections, and upcoming bookings. Ask about any fee or product-change options relevant to your account.
- Call Chase. Use the phone number printed on the back of your card or on your statement. Ask the representative to confirm pending points, the closure date, and how benefits tied to your card will be handled.
- Keep confirmation. Save the closure confirmation and any information Chase gives you about the final rewards transfer or benefit end dates.
- Verify the follow-through. Check IHG for any eligible final transfer and make sure the loyalty account remains open. Track the applicable inactivity period for your points.
Chase’s published agreement and IHG’s program terms describe general rules, not a guarantee about an individual account. The terms for your card, account status, and the confirmation from Chase determine account-specific details.
