The available reporting does not establish that Elon Musk failed to pay child support ordered by a court. Ashley St. Clair alleged that he cut support payments for their child; Musk said he had given her money and was sending annual payments, while also saying he was unsure about paternity. Those competing statements do not establish what either parent owed under a court order.

What did Ashley St. Clair and Elon Musk say about support?

In March 2025, St. Clair said Musk had cut their son’s support by 60 percent. Global News reported her allegation and quoted her saying she needed to make up for the cut. It was her account, not a court finding about the amount paid or owed.

In a March 31, 2025 social media post reported by E! News, Musk said he had given St. Clair $2.5 million and was sending her $500,000 per year. He also said he did not know for sure whether the child was his but was open to finding out. These figures are Musk’s claims; the reporting cited here does not independently verify the totals or establish that they were payments required by a court.

Did a court find that Musk failed to pay child support?

The reporting cited here does not establish such a finding. St. Clair filed a petition in Manhattan in February 2025 seeking legal recognition of paternity and sole custody, according to The Washington Post. That petition was a request for court action; it was not itself a final ruling on paternity, custody, or child support.

In January 2026, Musk said he would seek full custody, and coverage described the case as ongoing. June 2026 reporting continued to cover St. Clair’s account of financial difficulty and reduced payments. The reporting cited here does not establish a final support order or a judicial finding that Musk failed to pay an ordered amount. That distinction matters: a claim that voluntary payments were reduced is not the same as proof that someone violated a court-ordered obligation.

How should the payment figures be understood?

  • 60 percent: The reduction St. Clair alleged in 2025, as reported by Global News. It is not a court-determined figure.
  • $2.5 million and $500,000 per year: Amounts Musk said he had paid and was sending, respectively, in the March 31, 2025 post reported by E! News. They are his claims, not independently verified payment totals in the cited coverage.
  • $170,000 per month: The Times of London reported in 2010 that court filings described Musk as paying that combined monthly amount in legal fees and child support at the time. The figure is historical, combines two types of expense, and does not state a current child-support payment.

None of these amounts, by itself, establishes what a court required in St. Clair’s case. The cited reporting does not provide a verified current support obligation.

How are paternity, custody, and support different?

These issues can arise in the same family-court dispute, but they are not interchangeable. A paternity question concerns legal parentage; custody concerns decision-making and where a child lives; support concerns financial obligations. A petition asking a court to decide paternity or custody does not, by itself, prove that a particular support order exists or that it was breached.

Is the Grimes custody dispute the same case?

No. The Washington Post reported separately on Grimes’s California custody filing and quoted her saying she was going bankrupt while fighting for custody. That statement does not establish a specific support obligation, and her proceedings should not be conflated with St. Clair’s New York case.

Does Musk’s wealth determine whether he paid support?

No. A wealth ranking does not show what payments were made or what a court ordered. The reporting cited here does not verify a dated 2026 ranking, so it cannot support the headline’s “world’s richest person” description as a current fact. The relevant questions are what payments were made, what obligations a court established, and whether any court found that an order was violated.
