The so-called T-Rex leather handbag is no longer merely “coming soon”: VML says it was unveiled in Amsterdam on April 2, 2026. It is a one-of-a-kind collector’s piece planned for auction after a six-week exhibition, not a bag currently offered through ordinary retail. What is the T-Rex leather handbag?
It is a handbag designed by Enfin Levé using a lab-grown material the project partners call “T-Rex leather.” VML identifies the partners as VML, The Organoid Company, and Lab-Grown Leather Ltd. The name refers to the project’s engineered material; it does not mean the bag is made from preserved dinosaur skin.
Why the “leather” label is disputed
TechRadar’s April 2, 2026 coverage reports criticism of the terminology: the T. rex collagen evidence cited in earlier reporting came from fossilized bone, while leather is generally understood as a material made from skin. That report summarizes the objection but does not establish an independent scientific verdict on the handbag’s material. It is most precise to call it the project’s “T-Rex leather” or an engineered material inspired by ancient collagen.
How the partners say the material was made
VML says the team began with fossilized T. rex collagen sequences, then used computational biology and AI modelling to predict and reconstruct remaining genetic information for a collagen blueprint. The partners say they synthesized DNA, placed it in a carrier cell line, and cultivated engineered cells using Lab-Grown Leather’s Advanced Tissue Engineering Platform.

This account describes reconstructed sequence information and cultivated engineered cells—not intact dinosaur DNA or material taken from preserved T. rex skin. The process and material-performance descriptions are the project partners’ claims; the announcement does not include an independent laboratory test report.
Can you buy the handbag?
Not as an ordinary retail product based on the information VML has announced. VML describes this bag as a one-off collector’s piece, designed by Enfin Levé, that would be exhibited at Amsterdam’s Art Zoo Museum for six weeks and then auctioned to the highest bidder. What is known—and not known—about its claims
The partners describe the resulting material as durable, repairable, biodegradable, traceable, and structurally identical to traditional leather. For a prospective buyer, those missing details matter: a material’s durability depends on measurable performance and use conditions, while “biodegradable” needs a defined disposal environment and timeframe to be useful. Until such specifications and independent evidence are available, these qualities should not be treated as established product guarantees.
