Use the exact offer terms on your account to identify the spending threshold, qualifying-purchase rules, and deadline. Then put planned, affordable purchases that qualify on the card, track the net total, and aim to finish before the cutoff. Don’t buy things you don’t need or assume gift cards, fees, cash advances, or prepaid loads count.
Start with the terms attached to your offer
There is no single spending threshold or deadline that applies to every credit card welcome bonus. The offer’s terms control: they define the amount to spend, the time window, which transactions count, and any restrictions on who can receive the bonus. Read the offer shown during application and the account’s applicable disclosures rather than relying on a general rule of thumb. The CFPB’s May 2024 rewards spotlight describes consumer complaints about eligibility restrictions that were not clear to some applicants.
- Save the offer language. Keep a copy or screenshot of the welcome offer and its terms, including any offer-specific disclosure.
- Record the threshold and dates. Write down the required amount and the precise spending window. Do not assume the clock starts at approval, card delivery, or activation unless the terms say so.
- Check eligibility. Confirm that the offer applies to you, including any restrictions based on application channel or account history. Do not count on a bonus until you have checked the offer’s conditions.
Work out what spending can count
Count only transactions the offer defines as eligible purchases. The CFPB says, “Typically, issuers do not consider cash equivalents like gift cards to count towards a promotional spending minimum.” That is a general warning, not a universal definition: transaction treatment depends on the card’s terms.
For example, American Express’s published terms exclude items such as fees and interest, balance transfers, cash advances, traveler’s checks, gift cards, reloadable cards, and other transactions it defines as cash equivalents. Those terms also say refunded, returned, or cancelled purchases do not count, and describe how foreign-currency purchases are converted for a threshold. A separate American Express Blue Business Cash Card offer illustrates that specific welcome offers may list additional exclusions, including prepaid reloads and person-to-person payments. These are issuer- and offer-specific examples; check your own terms.

- Do not assume fees qualify. Annual fees and other fees are not purchases unless your offer explicitly says they count.
- Avoid cash-equivalent workarounds. Gift cards, prepaid loads, cash advances, and similar transactions may be excluded; buying them solely to reach a threshold is unreliable.
- Account for reversals. A refund, return, cancellation, or disputed transaction can reduce qualifying spend, and rewards may be reversed.
Plan around expenses you already expect
Estimate the eligible expenses you would normally pay during the offer window. If that ordinary spending can meet the threshold within your budget, route qualifying purchases to the card. Do not increase your spending or buy items you intend to return just to reach the bonus.
Chase’s welcome-bonus guidance likewise emphasizes checking the spending requirement, deadline, and eligible purchases. A simple tracker can help you compare the offer threshold with posted eligible purchases, while subtracting refunds or cancellations. Your tracker is an aid—not a substitute for the issuer’s terms and account records.

Finish before the deadline and verify the total
Complete qualifying purchases ahead of the stated cutoff when possible, then check account activity for refunds, cancellations, disputes, or other changes to the total. The deadline and transaction-posting rules are offer-specific; the available terms do not establish a universal buffer or guarantee that a purchase made on the final day will count. If the cutoff is close, or you are unsure whether a transaction qualifies or has been credited in time, ask the issuer.

Do not carry a balance or pay interest just to earn a welcome bonus. Interest is excluded from qualifying purchases in the cited American Express terms, and paying it to pursue a bonus can undermine the bonus’s value. Make purchases that fit your budget and pay the statement responsibly.
