A July 2024 report said Elon Musk planned to give about $45 million a month to America PAC, but the claim came from unnamed sources—not a public pledge by Musk. On July 23, Musk denied that specific monthly figure and said he was donating to the group at a much lower level. Later federal filings showed large cumulative contributions from Musk, but did not establish recurring $45 million monthly payments.
Where the $45 million-a-month claim came from
On July 15, 2024, Reuters reported a Wall Street Journal account that Musk planned to commit around $45 million a month to a new pro-Trump super PAC. The report attributed the plan to people familiar with Musk’s intentions; it was not a direct statement from Musk. Reuters via Investing.com, July 15, 2024
Reuters also noted that the America PAC filing available at the time, covering activity through June 30, did not list Musk as a donor and showed the committee had raised more than $8 million. That filing covered an earlier period and does not establish what Musk intended to contribute later.
What Musk said about the report
In a July 23 interview with Jordan Peterson, Musk said, “I am not donating $45m a month to Trump.” He identified America PAC as a group he had created. In a subsequent X reply, he acknowledged making donations to America PAC “at a much lower level” but did not specify an amount. The Guardian, July 23, 2024

What later filings showed
FactCheck.org reported that Federal Election Commission filings showed Musk had contributed more than $118.5 million to America PAC by mid-October 2024. That is a cumulative total through a later reporting period, not proof of a fixed monthly payment or of the earlier $45 million figure. America PAC is a super PAC, a political committee separate from Donald Trump’s candidate campaign committee. Super PACs may accept unlimited contributions for independent political activity; direct contributions to a candidate committee are subject to legal limits. So the original report concerned money reportedly intended for America PAC, not a direct $45 million monthly payment to Trump. The FEC’s America PAC committee page provides the committee’s official filing records.
