To fill out a deposit slip, identify the account receiving the money, list cash and each check separately, calculate the total, subtract any cash you want back, and sign the slip if the form or teller requires it. Check the account number before handing over the slip and deposit; layouts and requirements vary by bank.

How to fill out a deposit slip

  1. Check the account details. Use a slip for the account receiving the deposit. Fill in the date, account holder name, and account number if they are not already printed. Verify any preprinted account number, and select the right checking, savings, or business account if the slip offers that choice. Bank of America’s deposit agreement says it may rely on the account number on a slip even if the name differs; that is a Bank of America term, not a rule established here for every bank. Read Bank of America’s deposit agreement.
  2. Enter cash. Add the bills you are depositing and write the amount on the “Cash” line.
  3. List checks separately. Write each check’s amount on its own line and add the check number if requested. If the front has no room, use the back only if the slip provides space there. Enter the checks’ combined amount in a separate check-total field if present.
  4. Calculate the subtotal and net deposit. Add cash and checks for the subtotal. If you want cash back, enter that amount on the “Less Cash” or similar line, then subtract it and write the remainder on “Total” or “Net Deposit.”
  5. Sign if required and submit. Whether a signature is needed depends on the form and transaction. Ask the teller if you are unsure, and keep the receipt so you can confirm what was recorded.

How to calculate the deposit total

Use this formula: cash + checks − cash received back = net deposit. For example, $25 in cash plus a $120 check is a $145 subtotal. If you take $40 back, the net deposit is $105. This is an arithmetic example, not a bank rule.

Deposit slips and check endorsements are different

A deposit slip does not endorse a check. When the bank requires an endorsement, sign the back of the check in the designated area and follow the bank’s instructions. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that writing “for deposit only” and signing the check is a restrictive endorsement intended to limit the check to deposit in the payee’s account. A check payable to two people may require both signatures depending on whether the names are joined by “and” or “or”; ask the bank about unusual payee wording. See the CFPB’s guidance on “for deposit only” endorsements.

Do you need a paper deposit slip?

That depends on how you deposit and what your bank supports. A branch deposit may use a paper slip; an ATM may guide you through the deposit on screen; and mobile deposit is completed in the bank’s app. For example, Bank of America’s described app flow asks customers to photograph the front and back of an endorsed check, choose the destination account, enter the amount, and submit. Endorsement wording, eligibility, limits, and steps can vary, so use your bank’s instructions for the method you choose. Chase’s overview of branch, ATM, and mobile check deposits and Bank of America’s mobile check deposit information describe examples of those workflows.

What to check after depositing

Keep the receipt and check the deposit details against the account and amounts you intended. A receipt shows that the transaction was accepted or recorded; it does not mean every deposited check is immediately available.

The CFPB’s page, last reviewed August 28, 2026, says that for a check deposit over $5,525, generally $225 must be available the next business day, up to $5,525 within two business days for a local check, and the remainder generally within seven business days. The CFPB also notes that some circumstances can lead to longer holds. Availability depends on deposit type and bank policy, so check your bank’s current terms and any notice about a hold. Read the CFPB’s explanation of deposit availability.
