Local marketplaces can let buyers inspect before paying, while shipped transactions depend on fees, payment-release rules, and return deadlines. No platform can guarantee a safe transaction, and the available evidence does not support ranking 29 services by reliability, audience, or selling speed.
Start with the transaction, not the app
A local handoff and a shipped sale carry different trade-offs. For local sales, prioritize a public meetup, inspection before payment, and avoiding advance deposits. For shipping, read the fee schedule and the exact rules for payment release, claims, and returns before buying or listing.
- Choose local pickup when seeing or testing an item before paying matters and you can arrange a public meeting place.
- Choose shipping when distance or convenience matters more, but compare the platform’s protections and deadlines rather than relying on a “buyer protection” label.
These criteria are more useful than an unsupported “best” ranking: comparable evidence on marketplace audiences, sale speed, success rates, or scam rates is not established here.
Local alternative: OfferUp
OfferUp describes itself as a mobile-friendly community marketplace and says full feature access is limited to the United States. Browsing, posting, and chat are free; the company says it does not charge fees or take a commission on in-person transactions. Other features can cost money, including promotions, Premium, some job or service listings, and additional listings beyond the monthly free allotment. OfferUp’s overview explains its availability and fee qualifications.

What local buyers and sellers should know
OfferUp advises local buyers to inspect an item before paying. Its seller guidance describes vetted Community MeetUp Spots and says local sellers set their own return policies; after payment, a local sale is final unless the seller has offered a return arrangement. A suggested meetup spot does not remove the risks of meeting a stranger. See OfferUp’s seller guidance.
Scam signals to take seriously
OfferUp’s scam guidance, updated September 21, 2026, warns about fake off-platform links, requests for one-time verification codes, deposits before inspection, suspicious payment messages, impersonation, implausibly low prices paired with stock photos, overpayment offers, and gift-card schemes. Its advice is direct: “For local items, never pay in advance.” Do not follow payment or verification links sent in messages, and never share a one-time code. Read OfferUp’s scam guidance.

Shipped resale example: Mercari in the United States
Mercari’s US Buyer Protection terms show why shoppers should compare the mechanics of a shipped transaction, not just the advertised item price. The help page lists a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee applied to the item price and buyer-paid shipping. Payment is held until the buyer rates the order. If the buyer does not rate within 72 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery, the transaction completes automatically and funds are released. The page does not state a date for these terms, so check it again before purchasing.
Claim and return limits
A US buyer generally has 72 hours after confirmed delivery to report an item that is not as described. If a return is approved and eligible, it must be shipped within three days of claim approval. The policy excludes reasons such as fit, style, cleanliness, or a change of mind, so this is not an unrestricted return window. Details are in Mercari’s Buyer Protection policy.
Rank #3
Shipping means packing the item and, if a return is approved, sending it back; boxes and tape may be useful supplies, but they are not stated as a Mercari requirement. Local handoffs do not involve those shipping steps.
How much should seller verification influence your choice?
A 2024 Washington State Attorney General’s Office report describes verification practices at Nextdoor and Meta, but those details should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every marketplace user or seller has been checked.
Rank #4
- Nextdoor: The report says all users, including users of its For Sale & Free marketplace, go through verification using signals that can include device location and third-party data.
- Meta: The report says Meta requires certain high-volume third-party sellers—those exceeding $5,000 across at least 200 transactions in a 12-month period within the previous 24 months—to provide business information that Meta verifies and provides to buyers. This threshold applies to the specified seller category, not every seller.
The report concerns organized retail crime and marketplace practices; it is not a comparative consumer-safety rating or proof of everyday transaction outcomes. It also discusses gaps in marketplace responses to trafficking inquiries and recommends privacy-conscious, expedited information-sharing mechanisms. For a local handoff
- Agree on a public meetup place and inspect or test the item before paying.
- Do not send a deposit for a local item before seeing it.
- Keep payment and communication on the platform where possible; treat off-platform links and requests for verification codes as warning signs.
- Stop and reassess if the price is dramatically low, photos appear to be stock images, a buyer offers an unexplained overpayment, or anyone requests gift cards.
- For sellers, state any return arrangement clearly before the handoff; do not assume the platform supplies one.
These precautions reflect OfferUp’s published guidance and are sensible checks, not a guarantee of safety on OfferUp or any other service.

For a shipped purchase
- Check the full fee basis, including whether shipping is included in the calculation.
- Find out when the seller gets paid and whether a transaction can complete automatically.
- Note the deadline to report a problem, the conditions for an eligible return, and who arranges or pays for return shipping.
- Save the listing and relevant transaction messages in case you need to make a timely claim.
Can these sources establish 29 reliable alternatives?
No. They support a practical comparison of OfferUp’s US local-sale features, Mercari’s US shipped-sale terms, and limited verification practices described for Nextdoor and Meta in a 2024 government report. They do not establish current availability, fees, shipping eligibility, or protections for 29 services, nor do they prove that any one marketplace is reliably safe. Before using another platform, confirm its current terms and features directly with that service.
