What to Put on LinkedIn When You’re Unemployed

Show the roles and value you offer on LinkedIn while unemployed: write a focused headline, choose Open to Work visibility deliberately, and keep dates and experience honest.

On LinkedIn, lead with the work you can do and the roles you want—not unemployment as your professional identity. Use your headline to name a target role, relevant strengths, and credible evidence of your work; set your job preferences through Open to Work; and keep your work history and dates accurate. You do not need to invent a current position to show that you are looking.

What should your LinkedIn headline say?

Use your headline to help a reader quickly understand your professional focus. A useful pattern is target role or role family | relevant specialization or skills | sector, outcome, or proof. Treat it as a concise description of your value, not a claim that you currently hold the target job.

  • Operations Manager | Process Improvement | Healthcare and Logistics
  • Software Engineer | Python and Cloud Platforms | Building Reliable Data Systems

These are adaptable examples, not guaranteed recruiter-search formulas. Add “Open to [role]” only if you want to make your search explicit in the headline. LinkedIn has a separate Open to Work feature, so you can use headline space for your professional identity and relevant terms instead.

How should you use Open to Work?

Set preferences for the roles and locations you genuinely want. Depending on the options shown in your account, you may also be able to specify remote work, job type, and when you can start. LinkedIn says these preferences can help your profile appear in relevant recruiter searches. The U.S. Department of Labor’s March 2026 Employment Workshop participant guide also describes these job-search preference fields; check LinkedIn’s live interface because labels and navigation can change.

Choose a visibility level that fits your situation

Choice Reach Privacy Useful when
Recruiters only Shares preferences with eligible LinkedIn Recruiter users A narrower audience, but not guaranteed confidential You want a quieter signal
All LinkedIn members or public-facing Open to Work Makes your search visible to a wider network Less privacy You want contacts to notice and share leads
No Open to Work signal No structured signal through this feature More control over disclosure through this feature You are not actively searching or prefer direct outreach

LinkedIn says it takes steps to prevent LinkedIn Recruiter users at your current company from seeing your shared career interests, but warns that it cannot guarantee complete privacy. Recruiter-only is a privacy measure, not a promise of confidentiality. Exact choices may vary by account.

What should you put in the current-position field?

End your last job on its actual end date. Do not list a prospective employer, an invented consulting business, or a target position as current employment unless it is genuinely current. You can leave the current-position field empty and identify the roles you want in Open to Work preferences.

If you have real freelance, contract, volunteer, caregiving, education, or other relevant activity, describe it accurately in the appropriate section. Do not relabel an activity as a conventional job if it was not one. LinkedIn’s guidance supports keeping a robust, accurate profile, but does not settle every interface-specific choice about leaving this field blank; check the profile editor in your account.

How should you write your About and Experience sections?

About

Use the About section to explain your professional focus, the strengths you bring, evidence of your impact, and the kind of work you are seeking. Be specific enough to help readers connect your background to the roles you want. For example, name a relevant area of expertise and support it with a concrete project or result you can substantiate.

Experience

Keep titles, employers, and dates consistent with your actual work history and résumé. Highlight experience and skills relevant to your target jobs, and include only claims you can support. LinkedIn’s Job Search Guide recommends keeping your profile up to date and spotlighting experience and skills that match the work you want.

Should you post publicly that you are looking?

A post is optional. If you are comfortable telling your network, say what roles and locations you are pursuing, mention relevant strengths, and make a specific request—for example, introductions or leads. LinkedIn’s Job Search Guide describes using a post with #OpenToWork as one option. Decide whether public disclosure suits your circumstances; a post is not necessary to use the structured preferences feature.

Do profile-photo and skills statistics prove a profile will work?

LinkedIn’s Job Search Guide, published in 2020, reported “21x more views” and “up to 9x more connection requests” for members with a profile photo, and said members with five or more listed skills were contacted “27x more.” These are historical figures reported by LinkedIn, not current independent findings; they do not establish that a photo or a particular number of skills causes more recruiter attention. Use a professional photo and list relevant skills if they accurately represent you, but do not treat the figures as a promise of results.
