Luigi Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024, five days after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in Manhattan. In the federal case, Mangione pleaded guilty to two stalking counts on August 14, 2026, and was scheduled for sentencing on December 18, 2026. The separate New York state murder case remained pending in the latest account cited here.
When and where was Luigi Mangione arrested?
Altoona police arrested Mangione at a fast-food restaurant on December 9, 2024, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. That was five days after Thompson was killed in Midtown Manhattan on December 4 while heading to a company investor conference. Federal authorities said a restaurant worker recognized Mangione from public coverage of the suspect.
The arrest occurred in Pennsylvania; the shooting and the separate state prosecution are in New York. Those locations matter because federal and state proceedings have different charges and procedural statuses.
What happened in the federal case?
On August 14, 2026, the Southern District of New York announced that Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of cyberstalking through interstate facilities resulting in death. The office said sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2026. The plea resolves those federal counts, but does not by itself resolve the separate New York state murder case.

U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald characterized the plea by saying, “Today, Luigi Mangione admitted to stalking and murdering Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street in broad daylight.” That is the prosecutor’s statement; the formal federal counts announced with the plea were the two stalking offenses described above.
What is the status of the New York state case?
The state murder case is separate from the federal prosecution. The Associated Press’s latest timeline says it remained pending and that proceedings had been postponed indefinitely amid a double-jeopardy dispute. That status is time-sensitive: court schedules and rulings can change, so it should not be mistaken for a final outcome.

Earlier New York charging announcements and a September 16, 2025 state-court decision describe earlier stages of the case. They should not be treated as a current charge list or a substitute for the latest docket. A charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt.

In a December 2024 federal complaint announcement, the Justice Department said a pistol and suppressor recovered when Mangione was arrested were consistent with the weapon used in the killing. A later state-court decision recounted ballistics and DNA evidence described in the case record. These are descriptions attributed to prosecutors and the court record, not a jury’s finding in the state case.
