For 2026 tax filing, the right TurboTax alternative depends on your income, the forms your return needs, whether you need a state return, and how much help you want. Start with the IRS Free File eligibility check if your 2025 adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less; compare FreeTaxUSA if you want to assess a vendor-listed $0 federal option; and consider H&R Block if you prefer its online or desktop workflow. TaxAct and TaxSlayer are also options, but confirm current eligibility and prices before choosing.

How to choose a TurboTax alternative

Compare the complete cost and fit for your return, not just the advertised federal price. A free federal return can still involve a state-filing charge, and a free tier may not support every schedule or tax situation.

  • Eligibility and forms: Check income limits, age or residency requirements, and whether the service supports your income types, deductions, credits and schedules.
  • Total price: Add the federal preparation charge, each state return, any e-file fees, optional support and any fee for paying from a refund.
  • Help: Distinguish included support from paid live assistance or professional review. Treat provider descriptions as claims, not independent assessments.
  • Workflow: Decide whether you want guided online filing or downloadable desktop software, and check data-import options and included returns.

Prices and partner offers can change by filing season. The details below are based on pages available for the 2026 filing season and should be checked against each provider’s current terms.

Six TurboTax alternatives to consider

1. IRS Free File

IRS Free File connects eligible taxpayers to guided tax-preparation software from participating private providers. For the 2026 filing season, the IRS says taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less may qualify. Each partner can set additional requirements, such as age, residency or military status, and state-return charges vary. Use the IRS Free File lookup to find a partner whose conditions match your situation; selecting one takes you to that provider’s site. The IRS says a state return is not required to get a free federal return. The IRS’s 2026 announcement lists eight participating partners: 1040Now, Drake/1040.com, ezTaxReturn.com, FileYourTaxes.com, On-Line Taxes, TaxAct, TaxHawk/FreeTaxUSA and TaxSlayer.

2. IRS Free File Fillable Forms

If your income is above the guided-software limit, Free File Fillable Forms may be an option if you are comfortable preparing your own return using IRS instructions. They are electronic versions of IRS forms, rather than a guided interview, so they are better suited to filers who understand the forms they need. See the IRS Free File announcement for the program details.

3. FreeTaxUSA

FreeTaxUSA lists its Basic, Premium and Self-Employed federal return preparation at $0, and its state return at $15.99 per state. The provider describes rental income, investments and homeownership under Premium, and freelance, small-business and contractor situations under Self-Employed. These are vendor descriptions of plan features, not an independent review of how the software handles a particular return. Check the current pricing page against the forms you need.

The same page lists free basic email and in-app support, Deluxe support for $7.99, Pro Support for $64.99, audit defense for $19.99, and a $24.99 charge to pay preparation costs from a refund. These are listed prices and may change; consider them only if you need the related option.

4. H&R Block

H&R Block offers separate online and desktop paths, with different terms. Its online free edition is listed at $0 federal and $0 state for qualifying simple returns. The provider names Form 1040 and says the offer includes no schedules except those for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, student loan interest and retirement plan distributions. Check the online offer details to see whether your return qualifies.

The desktop software is a different product: H&R Block says it includes five federal e-files and lists state software at $39.95 per state, with possible extra fees. See the desktop software page for current terms. H&R Block also says users can import a prior TurboTax return: its statement, “Import last year’s TurboTax return data in seconds,” refers to a TurboTax .tax file; PDF import time varies with internet and system speed.

5. TaxAct

TaxAct’s official site advertises federal filing starting at $0 and offers online tax preparation. That starting price does not establish the cost or eligibility for your particular return. The available product information does not support a complete plan-by-plan comparison of forms and prices, so review the provider’s current terms before filing. TaxAct is also listed as a 2026 IRS Free File participant; check the IRS lookup for partner eligibility and current conditions. Visit TaxAct for its advertised offer.

6. TaxSlayer

TaxSlayer is a 2026 IRS Free File participant, but participation does not mean every taxpayer qualifies for its partner offer. Use the IRS Free File lookup and confirm TaxSlayer’s current conditions before starting. The available information does not establish comparable plan-by-plan pricing or form coverage, so check the provider’s terms for your return rather than assuming a particular cost or feature.

Check these details before you file

  1. List what your return needs. Identify income sources, deductions, credits and schedules, along with every state return you must file.
  2. Check eligibility through the official route. For IRS Free File, use the IRS lookup rather than assuming a partner offer applies to you.
  3. Compare the final price. Include state preparation and any paid support or payment options you intend to use, not only the advertised federal price.
  4. Confirm the filing-season terms. Verify the tax year, supported forms, prices and partner status on the provider’s current page before entering your information.
