Total revenue = quantity sold × price per unit. If you sell 100 items for $25 each during a month, total revenue is 100 × $25 = $2,500 for that month. For multiple products or services, calculate each line and add the results.
How to calculate total revenue for multiple products or services
Use the same formula for each offering, then add the line totals:
Total revenue = (quantity A × price A) + (quantity B × price B) + …
For example, a shop sells 40 notebooks for $5 each and 12 planners for $18 each in April:

- Notebooks: 40 × $5 = $200
- Planners: 12 × $18 = $216
- Total: $200 + $216 = $416 for April
This is the arithmetic total based on the stated quantities and prices. Whether it represents gross or net revenue depends on whether discounts, returns, or allowances have already been accounted for.
Choose a consistent period and unit
Revenue needs a defined period—such as a week, month, quarter, or year—because a quantity sold over one period cannot be sensibly multiplied by a price stated for another. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Financial Statement explains that an income statement reports performance over a specified period.

Use matching units and currency. For a service business, the billable unit might be hours multiplied by an hourly rate, or customers multiplied by a subscription price for the stated period. Do not mix monthly customer counts with annual subscription prices unless you first align the periods.
Gross revenue, net revenue, and profit are different
Gross revenue (or gross sales) is the top-line sales amount before sales deductions. Net revenue or net sales reflects applicable sales returns, discounts, and allowances. The SEC puts it this way: “When you subtract the returns and allowances from the gross revenues, you arrive at the company’s net revenues.” OpenStax likewise describes net sales as gross sales less sales discounts, returns, and allowances in its introductory accounting chapter.
Rank #3
If you are calculating from prices that are already discounted, do not subtract those discounts again. Keep gross and net figures tied to the same period and sales so the comparison is meaningful.
Revenue is not profit. An income statement starts with sales and then accounts for costs and expenses; do not subtract cost of goods sold, operating expenses, interest, or income taxes when answering a basic total-revenue question. Net revenue is also not net income.
Rank #4
When revenue is recorded
In a simple introductory example, revenue is recorded when it is earned—that is, when the product or service has been provided. The specific timing for contracts and unusual transactions can depend on the applicable accounting framework, so the multiplication formula alone does not determine when a sale belongs in a formal financial statement.

For U.S. small-business tax context, IRS Publication 334 describes net receipts as gross receipts less returns and allowances, with cost of goods sold then subtracted to calculate gross profit. It also notes that tax and financial-accounting treatment can differ in some cases. This is U.S.-specific guidance, not a universal accounting rule or tax advice for other jurisdictions.
