Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo bet on the Kentucky Derby, choose a wager, select a horse or combination of horses, and place the ticket through an eligible legal channel before betting closes. Win, place, and show bets ask which horse will finish among the relevant paying positions; exacta, trifecta, and superfecta bets require predicting the first two, three, or four finishers in exact order. Check the current Derby rules for available pools and minimums—those can change by year.
Choose a wager based on what you need to predict
The key difference between basic and exotic bets is the amount of finishing detail your ticket must get right. A basic wager focuses on one horse’s result; an exotic wager can require naming multiple finishers, sometimes in exact order. More selections or possible orders mean more combinations to pay for, not a better chance of profit.
| Wager | What your selection must do | Does finishing order matter? |
|---|---|---|
| Win | Finish first. | Yes: the horse must finish first. |
| Place | Finish in a paying position under the applicable pool rules. | No: the horse need not finish first, but must meet the pool’s place condition. |
| Show | Finish in a paying position under the applicable pool rules. | No: the horse must meet the pool’s show condition. |
| Exacta | Select the first two finishers. | Yes: both must finish in the exact order selected. |
| Trifecta | Select the first three finishers. | Yes: all three must finish in the exact order selected. |
| Superfecta | Select the first four finishers. | Yes: all four must finish in the exact order selected. |
The number of horses that qualify for place or show payouts depends on the current pool rules and field conditions; do not assume a fixed number of paying positions. Churchill Downs classifies exacta, trifecta, and superfecta among its advanced or exotic wagers, alongside multi-race options. Check its official wagering page and the applicable race rules for what is offered and how each pool is settled.
Calculate the ticket cost before placing it
A ticket’s cost is the denomination multiplied by the number of combinations it covers. One exact-order combination is different from a box: a box covers multiple possible orders among the selected horses, so it costs more at the same denomination.

For example, a two-horse exacta box covers both possible orders: horse A first and horse B second, or horse B first and horse A second. At a hypothetical $1 denomination, that is two combinations and costs $2. The example illustrates the math only; the actual denomination available for a pool must be confirmed in that year’s rules. Adding horses can increase the number of combinations quickly.
- Decide which horses you want to include.
- Work out how many orders or combinations the ticket covers.
- Multiply that number by the denomination you intend to wager.
- Confirm that the pool and denomination are offered for this race before submitting the ticket.
Churchill Downs’ wagering guide includes examples of wager construction, while its current rules determine permitted denominations. A box or broader combination ticket buys coverage, not a guarantee of a return.

Check the minimum for the exact wager and year
Minimums are not universal across every Derby-related pool. Churchill Downs’ beginner guide search excerpt states a $1 minimum for Oaks and Derby Day wagering, while the official rules for the 2026 Kentucky Derby Future Wager set a $2 minimum for those future pools. The latter applied to the 2026 pools, which resolved on the official result of the Derby held May 2, 2026; it is not a current instruction for a later Derby.
Before betting, check the minimum shown for the specific pool and edition. A Derby-day minimum should not be assumed to apply to a future wager, and a past year’s future-wager rules should not be carried forward. See Churchill Downs’ wagering information and the published 2026 Kentucky Derby Future Wager rules for those year-specific details.

Place a wager only through a channel available to you
Churchill Downs says wagering is available at the racetrack and online through TwinSpires; the Kentucky Derby FAQ identifies TwinSpires as its official betting partner. That does not mean online betting is available to every reader. Eligibility depends on location, applicable law, account conditions, and the service’s current terms.
- Check local eligibility. Confirm that pari-mutuel wagering and the online channel you intend to use are permitted where you are, and review the channel’s current eligibility requirements.
- Choose the channel. Churchill Downs identifies on-site betting and TwinSpires as channels. Its visitor information notes that the track operates under Kentucky statutes and regulator rules.
- Review the current pool and ticket terms. Confirm the wager is being offered, its minimum denomination, and the selections or combinations on the ticket.
- Submit before betting closes. Churchill Downs says, “Once the gates open, all pari-mutuel betting ceases.” Confirm the actual cutoff for the relevant pool with the official tote or current rules, and do not wait until the last moment.

Treat handicapping as analysis, not a promise
Past performances, race conditions, and other handicapping information can help you understand the field and construct a ticket. They cannot guarantee that a horse will win or that a wager will be profitable. Odds and pari-mutuel payouts change with the pool, and no wager type guarantees an edge. Churchill Downs’ wagering guide is a starting point for learning the terminology and mechanics; set a spending limit and bet only what you can afford to lose.

Derby-week matchups, multi-race wagers, and future pools are not necessarily offered every year in the same form. Churchill Downs’ 2026 Derby-week announcement described matchups on select days and multi-race options around Oaks and Derby week; those were that edition’s offerings, not a promise about a later year. Its 2026 future-wager rules described six pools and a $2 minimum for those pools. For a future Derby, use the official announcement and rules for that specific edition rather than relying on an older menu.
