A 1.2-million-square-foot paper-products warehouse in Ontario, California, burned on April 7, 2026. Authorities identified Chamel Abdulkarim, an employee of logistics company NFI Industries, as the suspect; he faces state charges and a federal arson complaint. The federal complaint alleges a motive tied to pay, but it is not proof, and Abdulkarim is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
What happened at the Ontario warehouse
At 12:36 a.m. on April 7, the first-arriving Ontario Fire Department engine found an established fire at a concrete tilt-up facility on Hellman Avenue. The City of Ontario said the 1.2-million-square-foot building was operated by Kimberly-Clark and used to distribute paper products. The department expanded its response to six alarms, with approximately 175 firefighters. The city said the fire was contained to the building of origin and reported no injuries to responders. The City of Ontario’s incident release said overhaul and extinguishment work continued through the evening.
The city identified Abdulkarim, 29, of Highland, as an employee of NFI Industries, which it described as a third-party distribution company for Kimberly-Clark products. He was not identified as a Kimberly-Clark employee. The city said an initially missing person was later suspected of starting the fire and located by police.
What the charges say—and what they do not prove
Ontario reported state arson-related felony charges. On April 10, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced a federal criminal complaint charging Abdulkarim with arson involving a building used in or affecting interstate and foreign commerce. The state charges and the federal complaint are separate proceedings. Ontario’s April 10 police update also said detectives were reviewing and working to authenticate circulating video; that update does not establish that the footage had been authenticated.

The federal announcement attributes remarks to alleged recordings, including: “Pay us more of the value WE bring. Not corporate. Didn’t see the shareholders picking up a shift.” Futurism’s April 9 report says a voice in video said, “All you had to do was pay us enough to live.” These are reported statements connected to the allegations, not court findings or proof of motive. The Justice Department expressly cautioned: “A complaint is merely an allegation of criminal conduct, not evidence.” Abdulkarim is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The federal charging announcement provides the government’s account of the complaint.
Damage estimate and reported inventory
The Justice Department estimated damage at approximately $500 million in its April 10 announcement. That is the federal government’s estimate at the charging stage, not a final audited loss figure.

Futurism reported that the warehouse held toilet paper and other paper goods; the city’s release describes paper products more generally. Neither source establishes that the fire caused a consumer shortage. Futurism’s April 9 report is the source for the more specific inventory description.
