Wear comfortable clothes that let you move, and build your outfit around removable layers and familiar, comfortable shoes. There is no single best plane outfit: the right choice depends on the flight, the cabin temperature, screening convenience and what you plan to do after landing.

How to choose a plane outfit

Use four practical checks: whether the clothes allow easy movement, whether you can adjust to temperature changes, whether your shoes are comfortable, and whether the outfit suits your plans on arrival. These are useful decision points, not a tested ranking of clothing or footwear.

  • Fit and movement: Choose pieces you can sit in comfortably and move around in.
  • Temperature: Wear layers you can take off or put back on without changing your whole outfit.
  • Footwear: Choose familiar shoes that are comfortable rather than new or tight ones.
  • Screening: If you want to make shoe removal easier at the checkpoint, slip-ons can be convenient.
  • Arrival plans: Consider whether you need to look polished or change for an event after landing.

Outfit ideas for different trips

Short flight

Keep it simple: comfortable trousers or leggings, a breathable top and shoes that are easy to manage at the checkpoint if you find that useful. A comfortable dress with a light layer is another option.

Long flight

Prioritize clothes that let you shift position comfortably. A removable cardigan or zip hoodie gives you an extra layer, and an extra pair of ordinary socks can be useful. Transavia recommends loose, comfortable clothing in multiple layers and an extra pair of socks in its tips for a pleasant flight.

Changing climates or uncertain cabin temperature

Use layers you can remove and carry rather than relying on one heavy item. Cabin temperature can vary; a layer lets you adjust without having to change your base outfit.

Work travel or a polished arrival

Stretch trousers with a comfortable top and a layer can look polished while still allowing movement. If your arrival requires a different look, carrying a change of clothes is a practical option, not an airline requirement.

Choose shoes for comfort and screening

Wear familiar shoes that fit comfortably. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that feet can swell because of pressure changes and advises against new or tight shoes while flying in its Fly Rights: A Consumer Guide to Air Travel. This is a reason to avoid shoes that feel restrictive, not a promise that a particular shoe will prevent a medical problem.

Slip-ons may save time at a checkpoint, but they are a convenience choice rather than a requirement for every traveler. The Transportation Security Administration says, “Travelers are recommended to wear slip-on shoes to remove and replace their shoes quickly,” in its TSA Travel Tips. Screening procedures can vary, so follow instructions at your checkpoint.

Check your airline’s guidance

Airline expectations can differ. Travel + Leisure reported on July 2, 2026, that American Airlines advises passengers to “dress appropriately; bare feet or offensive clothing aren’t allowed.” That is a reported example, not a universal dress policy. For advice that applies to your specific trip, check the airline operating your flight: the Federal Aviation Administration says, “Your airline also provides up-to-date information for your specific flight,” in Preparing to Fly.
