The answer depends on which assets you compare, the dates and currency you use, and whether you count fees and staking or mining proceeds.
Why “most profitable” depends on the comparison
A cryptoasset can lead over one period and lag over another. A claim that one coin was the most profitable is meaningful only when it specifies the assets included, the start and end dates, the comparison currency, and how costs and rewards were handled. Without those details, a ranking can hide as much as it reveals.
No reliable, dated comparative return series is established here, so naming a current leader or publishing a winners table would be unsupported. A past leader would not, by itself, establish which asset will perform best in the future.
How to compare crypto returns fairly
- Set the comparison universe and dates. List the assets you are comparing and use the same start and end dates for each. A result for a selected group is not a ranking of every cryptocurrency.
- Choose one currency. Compare each asset in the same currency; otherwise, exchange-rate movements can affect the apparent result.
- Make the return basis explicit. State whether figures are gross or net and which trading, custody, or other fees are included. Do not compare a fee-free headline figure with a net figure as though they were equivalent.
- Separate price movement from rewards. Show price appreciation separately from any staking or mining proceeds, then explain how rewards were valued and whether related costs were counted.
- Consider risk and practical constraints alongside return. Note material differences in volatility, liquidity, custody, leverage, and jurisdiction. A higher reported return alone does not describe the risks or conditions needed to pursue it.
What can make a return hard to achieve—or increase the risk
Crypto values are driven by supply and demand and can be more volatile than traditional fiat currencies, according to the CFTC’s virtual-currency risk advisory. A return measured over a particular window may therefore say little about the path an investor experienced along the way.

Leverage adds another risk rather than making an asset inherently more profitable. The CFTC warns that leverage magnifies the effects of price changes in margined futures; a move against a position can consequently have a larger impact than it would without leverage. The comparison should identify whether leverage was used rather than treating leveraged and unleveraged results as equivalent.
Be skeptical of promised returns
Trading or mining offers that promise high guaranteed returns with little risk are a warning sign. A joint SEC and CFTC investor alert states: “Claims such as ‘risk-free’, ‘zero risk’, ‘absolutely safe’, and ‘guaranteed profit’ are hallmarks of a fraud.” Read the SEC and CFTC digital-fraud alert before relying on an advertised yield or investment pitch.

What current U.S. crypto guidance does—and does not—tell you
On March 17, 2026, the SEC and CFTC announced a joint interpretation addressing crypto-asset categories and how federal securities laws apply to matters including airdrops, protocol mining, protocol staking, and wrapping a non-security crypto asset. See the SEC release and the CFTC release. The SEC’s crypto-asset FAQ lists an update date of September 25, 2026.
This is U.S. federal context, not a determination that a particular asset, provider, or investment is safe or profitable. Rules in other jurisdictions may differ.

Custody protects access, not investment value
A hardware wallet may be relevant if you hold crypto and want to manage custody of your assets. It does not generate investment returns or prevent the market price from falling; custody choices and investment performance are separate questions.
