Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor 2025, Carbuyer’s UK-market ranking puts the Mercedes-Benz S-Class first, followed by the BMW i7 and Range Rover. That is one publisher’s editorial order, not a universal verdict: Autocar’s later 2025 list put the i7 first and also included the BMW iX and Porsche Cayenne. The right choice depends on whether you value driver involvement, rear-seat comfort, electric power, SUV practicality or the cost of ownership most.
The ranking below follows Carbuyer’s list, published 10 December 2024. It draws on editorial reviews rather than a controlled comparison of all ten cars. Equipment, powertrains, prices and specifications vary by market and trim, so check the version sold where you live before making a purchase decision.
Carbuyer’s 10 best luxury cars of 2025
| Rank | Model | What stands out | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mercedes-Benz S-Class | Exceptional refinement, advanced technology and a suspension designed to anticipate road surfaces; especially appealing for rear-seat passengers. | High purchase and running costs; Carbuyer also criticized laggy augmented-reality features. |
| 2 | BMW i7 | Quiet electric drive, generous rear-seat space and strong acceleration. Carbuyer lists 449 bhp for the eDrive 50 and 651 bhp for the M70, with a 343–387-mile range band. | Large and technology-heavy; the official range figure should not be mistaken for a guaranteed real-world result. |
| 3 | Range Rover | Long-wheelbase versions offer substantial rear-seat room, with optional reclining massage seats, air suspension and a broad engine range. | High purchase prices; the model did not have an electric version at launch. |
| 4 | Mercedes-Benz EQS | A fully electric flagship with an aerodynamic shape, a sumptuous cabin and extensive technology. | Carbuyer notes a firmer ride and a screen-heavy dashboard; its article states a 450-mile range, a figure that depends on version, market and test standard. |
| 5 | Range Rover Sport | Smaller, lighter and more agile than the Range Rover while retaining a luxury-focused cabin and ride. The SV version is described with a twin-turbo 616 bhp V8. | Its appeal is less about maximum cabin space than the larger Range Rover; exact performance and equipment depend on version. |
| 6 | Lotus Eletre | A fully electric SUV with a technology-led cabin, quick responses, agile handling and five- or four-seat layouts. | Carbuyer found the door cameras awkward to use; the four-seat layout reduces boot space. |
| 7 | BMW X7 | Seven seats, air suspension, composed road manners and useful powered seat and tailgate functions. | Its size can be difficult on UK roads. Carbuyer’s article cites a 395 bhp M50d and 0–62 mph in 5.4 seconds; confirm that configuration for the model year and market you are considering. |
| 8 | Bentley Bentayga | A handcrafted cabin with extensive personalization and a powerful, engaging drive. | Fuel consumption and purchase costs are high, and Carbuyer reports that the ride can shudder over some surfaces. |
| 9 | Porsche Panamera | Precise steering, strong grip, hybrid choices, rear-seat screens and hatchback practicality. | Carbuyer says some rivals are more comfortable and refined; the car’s size can make maneuvering harder. |
| 10 | Rolls-Royce Cullinan | A V12-powered SUV that prioritizes comfort, a practical cabin and boot, and off-road ability over outright speed. | High running costs, expensive options and a very large footprint. |
These are judgments from Carbuyer’s UK-focused editorial list, not results from one head-to-head test. Its figures and equipment descriptions should be treated as applying to the versions and market covered by that article, not automatically to every 2025 car sold elsewhere.
Why other 2025 rankings have different winners
Autocar’s list, published 25 July 2025, ranked the BMW i7 first, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class second, then the BMW iX and Porsche Cayenne. Its criteria span design, interior, performance, ride and handling, and costs. Different weightings—and a list that includes more SUVs—naturally produce a different order.
#1 Best Overall
Other honors answer still different questions. In the United States, Cars.com named the 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70 its Best Luxury Car of 2025; it lists 429 hp, 236 miles of estimated electric range and a $68,400–$75,200 starting-price range including destination. Those are Cars.com’s U.S.-market figures, not a direct comparison with Carbuyer’s UK top ten. The 2025 World Car Awards named the Volvo EX90, Porsche Macan and Porsche Panamera in its World Luxury Car category, while the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS won World Performance Car. Awards provide useful context, but they are not a complete purchase ranking.
What the rankings mean for performance, technology and comfort
Performance is more than acceleration
For immediate, quiet acceleration, the electric i7 and Eletre are natural candidates; the Panamera emphasizes steering precision and grip, while the Range Rover Sport SV offers a high-output V8 option. Those descriptions are not a controlled performance comparison. Test the actual trim you might buy, and consider how it behaves at ordinary road speeds, not only its headline output.

Judge technology by how it works
A long feature list does not guarantee an easier drive. Carbuyer flags laggy augmented-reality features in the S-Class, a screen-heavy dashboard in the EQS and awkward-feeling door cameras in the Eletre. Sit in the car and try the navigation, climate controls, cameras and driver-assistance settings before deciding whether the technology helps or distracts you.
Match comfort to the passengers
A chauffeur-focused buyer may value the S-Class or long-wheelbase Range Rover’s rear accommodation more than handling. A driver who wants a more involving luxury car may prefer the Panamera or Range Rover Sport. The Bentayga and Cullinan place strong emphasis on luxury and comfort, but their size, costs and ride characteristics still merit a personal test drive. Bring the passengers who will use the car most often: front-seat comfort does not establish how the rear seats will feel on a long journey.

How to compare electric range responsibly
Range figures are meaningful only with their trim, market and test basis attached. Carbuyer gives the i7 a 343–387-mile band. Separately, Autocar reports a 385-mile official range claim and 264 miles in its own test. Those figures describe different contexts; the test result is not a universal outcome for every i7, route or driver. Carbuyer states 450 miles for the EQS, but the applicable trim and test standard should be checked before treating that as a current specification.
Before choosing an electric or plug-in-hybrid luxury car, compare the exact version’s local official range, charging options and your regular journey pattern. If you cannot charge conveniently where you park, a long claimed range may matter less than charging access and how often you need to make longer trips.

Check the ownership costs, not just the ranking
Carbuyer identifies high purchase or running costs as drawbacks for several cars, including the S-Class, Range Rover, Bentayga and Cullinan. It does not provide a common cost-of-ownership calculation for all ten, so the list cannot tell you which will be cheapest to own. Request written, local figures for the precise car and ownership period you are considering.
- Compare like with like: match trim, drivetrain, options and delivery charges when comparing purchase offers.
- Estimate the full term: include financing, insurance, energy or fuel, servicing, tires, taxes and expected resale value over the period you expect to keep the car.
- Separate standard equipment from options: personalization and luxury features can change the price substantially, particularly on high-end models.
- Test your real use: check parking, garage access, passenger space and cargo needs before paying for a large SUV or long-wheelbase sedan.
- Verify local specifications: model names, engines, seats, range figures and equipment may differ between the UK, U.S. and other markets.
Owner studies and awards should also be read in context. Porsche reports that it scored 890 on J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. APEAL Study, compared with a premium-brand average of 881. The study surveyed 92,964 owners of new 2025-model-year vehicles after 90 days, with fieldwork from June 2024 through May 2025. This is brand-level U.S. owner-appeal evidence, not a direct test of comfort or performance in every model on this list.
